Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Tension seems to have been escalating in Tinsukia a day after one person was killed and ten others have been injured when a section of people clashed to security forces during an eviction drive at a forest area.The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when security forces were on a drive to evict the encroachers in the Namfai forest area in Jagun.A section of the encroachers tuned violent forcing the security forces to lob tear gas shell. As the situation went out of control, the security forces resorted to firing where one person was killed and ten others sustained injury.
The Gauhati High Court is expected to clear it judgments on four other bail petitions moved by Akhil Gogoi on Monday.The judgments are expected at any moment. Even if  the court grants bail on Monday, the KMSS president would not be able to come out of the jail.He has several other cases pending against him. The court has already cleared bails in alteast seven cases. The crucial one was the self immolation case in Dispur.        
KMSS on Sunday threatened the Government of dire consequences if it further files cases against Akhil Gogoi.The organization made it clear that if the government resorts to nefarious tactic to keep the KMSS president in jail till the Lok Sabha poll, the result would be a disastrous.The High Court on Monday will hear the a few bail petitions moved by Gogoi’s counsel a few days after he procured bail in a few cases.      
The Election Commission has registered a case against Dhubri Congress candidate Wazed Ali Chaudhury for allegedly distributing money at a poll rally.The country’s poll panel has lodged the complaint against the Congress candidate before the additional superintendent of police for investigation.The Election Commission took the decision after it examine the video footage where the candidate himself was seen distributing money at a poll rally. 
AICC is preparing a film on poll campaign in New Delhi where three senior Congress leaders from Assam are set to find place.The sudden invitation came to Lakhimpur Congress candidate Ranee Narah, her Tezpur counterpart Bhupen Bora.They are apart from Congress leader and health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who arrived in the capital on Sunday evening.The trio are expected to be back on Monday.
Amid non cooperation in poll campaign by a section of party legislators, Lakhimpur Congress candidate Ranee Narah has arrived in New Delhi on Sunday.The Union minister is believed to have been preparing to apprise the party high command of the growing dissidence against her in the run up to the Lok sabha polls.Notably, a section of party legislators have been shying away from campaigning for the Lakhimpur’s sitting MP alleging that they were not satisfied with her.Tezpur Congress candidate Bhupen Bora has also arrived in New Delhi on Sunday evening. Bora and Ranee Narah are believed to have been invited for discussion on poll prospect by the party high command.
Koliabor Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi has dared CMSS to challenge his affidavits before the Election Commission.Gogoi’s sharp reaction came a day after the student body alleged that the chief minister’s son has not provided the real assets owned by him.Talking to reporters in Sarupathar, Gogoi said any organization is free to lodge any complaint against him.CMSS on Saturday lodged a complaint before the election commission that in his affidavit, Gogoi has not provided all particulars on his assets.    
Top ranked Congress leaders are pouring in to woo the voters ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will visit the state on March 27.Party president Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit the state on March 28.This would be followed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit to his second home state on March 29.
Poachers have killed yet another rhino in Kaziranga to take away its horn.The hornless carcass was found in Kohora range of the national park on Sunday morning.Forest guard spotted the carcass hours after two poachers were killed in a heavy gunbattle in the same range on Saturday evening.With this, the number of rhinos killed in poaching has gone up to 15. This week alone, the poachers have killed two rhinos in the world heritage site.    
At least 15 girls from a Dibrugarh university hostel have been undergoing treatment of food poisoning after they had their lunch on Saturday evening.According to information, initially one of them fell ill and complained of stomach ache after she took lunch in the evening. Her condition is believed to have been serious even after she was shifted to the Assam Medical College Hospital.Hours after it, at least 15 girls complained of stomach ache and vomiting one after  another forcing the authorities to rush them to the hospital. The reason is yet to be ascertained.
