All India Patriotic Forum, Assam branch on Saturday remembered Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury, who joined the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943 and fought many battles for the motherland. Probably the last INA soldier from Assam, Devchoudhury passed away on December 11, 2013 at his residence in Patacharkuchi of lower Assam. A Lieutenant of INA, Devchoudhury maintained an active life till his demise at the age of 97.
In a formal memorial meeting held in Guwahati Press Club various speakers highlighted the spirit of patriotism shown by Devchoudhury and his colleagues who led an eventful struggle in various south and southeast Asian places like Singapore, Rangoon, Arakan front etc. With his sincerity and commitment, Devchoudhury elevated himself up to the level of Lieutenant in INA and led his troop against the British imperial forces mostly on the India-Myanmar border in 1944 to make India an independent nation.
Speakers including freedom fighters Jatin Goswami & Ganesh Chandra Das, Prof Rabin Devchoudhury, Ajay Dutta, Jaharlal Saha, Umakanta Bhattacharya, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Rupma Barua, Hiten Mahanta, Nava Thakuria, KN Devchoudhury, Pramod Kalita etc paid their heartiest tributes to the departed soul.
Before the meeting, floral tributes were also paid to Devchoudhury and two patriotic songs ‘Bande Mataram----’and ‘O Mor Aponar Desh ----’were also sung by the participants in the memorial meeting.

The Delhi government has endorsed the office bearers of Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) headed by president K Vikram Rao, as the legal and representative body of the working journalists across the country. The government in the national capital of India took the decision after five months of intensive scrutiny, as a dispute was raised by IFWJ’s former secretary general Parmanand Pandey. Veteran Assamese editor-journalist Tilak Hazarika was hospitalized on Monday night at GNRC hospital (Dispur campus) following brain hemorrhage. According to the hospital source, his condition remains critical. The former editor of Asom Bani and Sadin was not feeling well for some time due to age related ailments. Despite stepped up measures, the armyworms menace in the crops fields in Assam refuses to die down. The menace keeps spreading to more and more areas much to the major disappointment of the farming community who fear a feminine-like situation in the state. Now altogether 22 districts have been grappling with the menace forcing the government to step up measures to deal with the situation where crops on more than 31, 000 hectares land have been damaged. The worst-hit district is Golaghat which is followed by Majuli apart from Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar. The newly affected districts include Charaideo, Darrang, Nagaon, Morigaon, Kamrup, Sonitpur, Dhemaji and Biswanath.
Much to a major embarrassment for the BJP-led Government in Assam, many army worms hit farmers alleged Government negligence. Many peasants in the worst-hit Golaghat district have alleged that the agriculture department has yet to send officials to deal with the situation. “We the farmers in 10 villagers have yet to see an officer here. In yet another high voltage drama that changes the state’s political landscape in Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the Congress legislators, mostly, have joined People's Party of Arunachal on Thursday. Except Nabam Tuki who helped Khandu become the new Chief Minister remained in the ruling party a month after Kalikho Pul commite suicide. Altogether 8 people has a miraculous escape from death when the private helicopter carrying them from Guwahati to Itanagar landed safely in Nagaon on Thursday. The incident took place at 10-20 in the morning when the chopper noselanded at Nehrubali in Nagaon town because of a technical snag. Skyone Airways official confirmed that the chopper developed a technical snag minutes after it departed Guwahati to the capital city of Itanagar with six of its staff and two passengers.
