Int'l Women’s Day at Orengajuli tea garden
On the occasion of International Women’s Day held on Sunday at Orengajuli tea garden, the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district urged the tea women workers to come together to eradicate the curse of gender inequality in the district. In a programme organised by the Orengajuli and Nonaipara tea estate Mahila Samity at Orengajuli market complex to celebrate the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner Smt. Sadhona Hojai in presence of Smt. Kamali Basumatary, MLA 64 No. Panery constituency, Sri Suresh Tanti, MCLA 33 No. Nonai Serphang constituency (BTC), Ranjit Deka, President Nonai Sephang Block BPF, Mariam Toppo, President Udalguri district AAWAA and members of various organisations and tea estate workers said, “ The women plays an important role in nurturing and shaping lives of their children by providing education and to prohibit liquor drinking in the society especially in the tea garden areas.”
Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Kamali Basumatary said, “It is a day to rekindle hope to the oppressed section of women. Women must be encouraged towards the rights of a woman. Sharing her views, the MLA demanded that 8th March should be declared as a holiday for the government and non- government sectors so that women working in tea estates may observe the day.
It may be mentioned here that International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day was marked with garden jhumur dances. The occasion was presided over by Sarita Xalxo, President of the Samity.

The mysterious death of an elephant calf casts no less spell of shadow in Udalguri on Monday. According to Ranjit Tanti, a wildlife activist, the calf, aged around 8, was found dead at a paddy field in Jorpukhuri village under Nonai forest range. Body of one Bikash Munda (18), an Adivasi youth was recovered Monday morning in No.1 sonajuli area under Dimakuchi, Udalguri. Police recovered the body from his uncle’s house and further investigations are on. It has been reported that Bikash Munda son of Rantu Munda had gone to sleep at his uncle’s house adjacent to Nengta Bodo’s house who have fled from their residence since morning.
