ATASU protest for ST status

Activists of All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) shouted slogans against Central and State governments near Deputy commisioner office Golaghat on wednesday. Two activists of among of them tried to emblematic suicide.


Talking to Assam Times, ATASU  acting president Chao Krishna Baruah  and joint secretary Chao Pankaj Gogoi and Dhruba Jyoti Saikia  slammed Narendra Modi-led BJP government for not granting the ST status to the Tai Ahom community along with six indigenous communities of the State. They alleged that before Lok Sabha election Modi assured to grant ST status, but after coming to power he forgot his promises. Further they said that five community like Tai Phake, Tai Khamti, Tai Turung, Tai Aiton and Tai Khamyang are getting ST status. Only the Tai Ahom community is being deprived from its due. The ATASU leaders urged both the Central and State  governments to grant ST status to Tai Ahom  community or pay heavy price in the forthcoming election in the Ahom community areas.
