Class 12 Student Swept Away as Dikhow Erodes Riverbank in Nazira

NAZIRA, July 23, 2026 — An 18-year-old student lost his life after being swept away by the swollen Dikhow river when an eroding riverbank suddenly collapsed in Mesagarh under Nazira on Thursday morning.

The victim, identified as Amlan Borgohain of Mesagarh Gohain Gaon, was a Class 12 student of Mesagarh Joktoli Higher Secondary School.

According to local residents, the incident occurred around 10 am when Amlan was standing near the riverbank. A section of the bank suddenly gave way due to severe erosion, throwing him into the fast-flowing river. He was swept away before anyone could rescue him.

The Dikhow has been flowing above the danger mark at several locations in Sivasagar district following incessant rainfall in neighbouring Nagaland, triggering widespread flooding and riverbank erosion.

The tragedy has plunged Mesagarh village into mourning, with teachers and fellow students of Joktoli Higher Secondary School expressing grief over the untimely death of the young student.

Authorities have appealed to residents to avoid riverbanks during the ongoing flood season as erosion and strong currents continue to pose serious risks.
