Comments on animal sacrifice on Id-ul-Zuha trigger protest
Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar’s son Y Devjit has been widely condemned for making “anti-Muslim” comments on Facebook about animal sacrifice by Muslims on Id-ul-Zuha, triggering protest.
Muslim community in Manipur has condemned the comments on the social networking site by Devjit saying that those comments reflect prejudice against Muslims.
Under the banner of the Manipur Muslim Welfare Organsiation (MMWO), residents of Muslim-dominated Hatta Golapati staged a protest against the incident on Wednesday demanding immediate arrest of the Deputy CM’s son and punishment to him as per the law of the land.
“Devjit’s comments were anti-Muslim and communal in the multi-ethnic state of Manipur,” MMWO president Abdullah Pathan said.
His remarks about animal sacrifice by Mulims on Id-ul-Zuha reflect prejudice against Islam, Pathan said.
Followers of Islam traditionally kill animals in celebration of Id-ul-Zuha across the world.
“It’s a matter of serious concern that the police have not been acted on the issue to book the son of one of state’s leaders Yumnam Joykumar,” he said.
He said the protest was organised to air the voice of condemnation against the failure of the authority to nab him (Devjit) till now.
The MMWO leader vowed to carry out intense agitation over the incident if the government fails to book the culprit at the earliest.
