Golaghat Press Club condemns attack on scribes
The Golaghat Press Club (GPC) condemns the attacks on media persons and the destruction of their equipment and vehicles by bandh supporters in different parts of the State during the bandh called by All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU). “Those covering the bandh had no views for or against the issues being raised and were professionally acting as messengers of the news. This is nothing but an attack on democratic institutions and these groups have no right to vent their frustration on innocent professionals involved in news coverage” GPC Working President Bikash Sarma said in a statement. The members of Golaghat Press Club staged a dharna infront of Deputy Commissioner’s Office Golaghat and submitted two memorandums to Chief Minster and Governor demanding arrest of culprits involved in the attacks on scribes. GPC also demanded the Govt. to ensure the security of journalists and to provide adequate compensation to the injured. The GPC took a resolution to boycott all programmes of AAMSU and never to cover any news relating bandh called by any organisations and appealed to all journalists of the state to take a similar resolution and keep away from all bandh related news coverage.
