GU Students Protest Against Exam Controller’s Misbehavior

A tense situation unfolded at Gauhati University today as students staged a fierce protest against the alleged misbehavior of the university’s examination controller. The demonstration escalated when Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, instead of calming the students, was seen sitting on the ground and shouting, “Hit me, hit me!” in a dramatic display of defiance. This behavior further provoked the students, intensifying the unrest on campus.

According to sources, the protest erupted after Examination Controller Kandarpa Sharma reportedly mistreated a section of students earlier today, sparking outrage among the Postgraduate Students’ Union (PGSU). During the agitation, the Vice-Chancellor emerged from his office and confronted the students. Witnesses reported that Dr. Mahanta, noticing a student panting, thumped his chest repeatedly, declaring, “This won’t work with me this time!” He also challenged the protesters, yelling, “If you can’t give me 10 minutes, then hit me!”—actions that worsened the already volatile situation.

The student community has demanded the immediate removal of Examination Controller Kandarpa Sharma. The Vice-Chancellor’s conduct has triggered widespread criticism, raising questions about how such behavior from the head of a premier educational institution can effectively guide the student body.

Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has voiced support for the students’ movement. Bedabrata Bora, Chairperson of the party’s Media Cell, remarked, “The academic environment in the education system is gradually deteriorating. After failing to conduct Higher Secondary first-year exams on time and properly, Gauhati University has now also failed to provide students with timely mark sheets and certificates. This has forced students to protest today. This government excels only in communal politics. We once again warn the government against ruining the future of our students.
