The Guwahati Press Club (GPC) on Saturday strongly condemned recent incidents of alleged attacks on journalists and called for unity among media professionals to defend press freedom.

At a protest meeting organised by the club, journalists condemned the alleged attack on media personnel who had gone to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to cover a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The journalists were allegedly assaulted by a group of ruling-party goons in the presence of Delhi Police.

The club also condemned an incident at the fast-track court premises in connection with the Zubeen Garg death case, where a senior advocate allegedly obstructed a journalist from performing professional duties and behaved improperly. The club decided to lodge a written complaint against the advocate with the Gauhati High Court Bar Association.

Presiding over the meeting, GPC president Khagen Kalita urged journalists across media organisations to remain united against attacks on the media. He also cautioned against attempts to create confusion and divisions within the journalistic community.

Senior journalist and Journalists' Union of Assam representative Shamim Sultana Ahmed called upon journalists to remain united and strengthen their commitment to professional responsibilities at a critical juncture for democracy.

Journalists Santi Das, Tapan Borthakur and Priti Priyadarshini also spoke at the meeting. More than 50 journalists participated in the protest.
