he North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS), a grassroots development organisation based in Jorhat district, has partnered with Change Alliance, a social impact development agency, to strengthen climate-resilient livelihoods and community action in Assam.

Titled “Strengthening Climate-Resilient Livelihoods and Community Action in Assam,” the initiative will be implemented across 10 villages in Jorhat and Golaghat districts. It will work with local communities to strengthen their capacity to cope with growing climate and disaster-related challenges.

The programme will promote locally led solutions, climate-resilient livelihoods and community action, with a focus on strengthening community capacities and supporting vulnerable households to adapt to a changing climate.

Communities in Assam, particularly those dependent on agriculture and natural resources, are increasingly exposed to floods, erratic weather patterns, environmental degradation and other climate-related risks. The initiative will support communities in identifying and adopting locally appropriate adaptation measures and sustainable livelihood strategies.

Tirtha Prasad Saikia, Director of NEADS, said, “Climate change is increasingly affecting livelihoods, food security and the resilience of communities across Assam. Our partnership with Change Alliance will strengthen community-led solutions, build local capacities and promote practical approaches that enable vulnerable communities to adapt while protecting and improving their livelihoods.”

The initiative builds on NEADS’ experience in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, humanitarian response, sustainable livelihoods and community-led development. It will place communities at the centre of resilience-building by recognising local knowledge, strengthening collective action and promoting sustainable livelihood practices.

The partnership will also emphasise community participation, accountability, safeguarding, learning and evidence-based approaches to ensure that the programme remains responsive to the priorities and realities of the communities involved.

Through the initiative, NEADS and Change Alliance aim to contribute to stronger and more resilient communities in Jorhat and Golaghat by advancing climate adaptation, sustainable livelihoods and locally led community action.

The partnership marks another step in NEADS’ efforts to connect climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods and community leadership towards building a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable Assam.
