Piano Kids, Assam’s premier musical institute, celebrated its 15th anniversary on October 10 with a programme at ‘Jibakrishna’, an intimate in-campus stage in Guwahati.

The event brought together students, parents and alumni to celebrate the institute’s journey under the guidance of its founder, piano maestro Kushal Krishna Dev Goswami. The programme was anchored by novelist and writer Munmi Mahanta.

The highlight of the evening was the cutting of a music-themed anniversary cake, accompanied by cheers and applause from students and well-wishers.

The institute’s journey began with a vision in 2008 before it was formally launched on October 10, 2011, with the aim of introducing children to music, nurturing their talents and providing opportunities for them to excel.

From an academy that started with just four students, Piano Kids has grown into a recognised institution in Assam’s cultural landscape. It currently has more than 250 enrolled students, while over 400 students have completed their musical education there. More than 45 students are pursuing advanced-level music studies.

Piano Kids follows John Thompson’s piano teaching syllabus, with instruction based on Western staff notation. A key focus of the institute is documenting Assamese songs in staff notation to help preserve indigenous musical traditions for future generations.

Its curriculum includes Borgeet, prayers, Bihu songs, Biya Naam, Holi songs, Jhumur songs, lullabies, Bhupendra Sangeet, Bishnu Sangeet, Jyoti Sangeet, Parvati Sangeet and Zubeen Sangeet.

Over the years, the institute has organised nine major musical events in Guwahati. Hundreds of students trained in staff notation have performed these compositions as musical symphonies at prominent venues, including the ITA Centre in Machkhowa, Rabindra Bhawan, Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium at Kalakshetra and Shilpagram.

Traditional Assamese folk songs have featured prominently in these performances. Through its initiatives, Piano Kids seeks to popularise piano education, develop young musical talent and document Assamese melodies using Western staff notation, helping safeguard the region’s musical heritage.

The 15th anniversary celebration marked a milestone in the institute’s journey and recognised the vision and dedication of its founder and mentor, Kushal Krishna Dev Goswami.
