Upper Assam Floods: Thousands in Nazira Face Acute Shortage of Food, Water

NAZIRA, July 24, 2026 — Thousands of flood-hit residents in Nazira Co-District of Sivasagar are battling acute shortages of food, drinking water and other essentials as the Dikhow River continues to wreak havoc across the region.

Floodwaters, which began inundating large parts of the area on July 19, have left vast stretches under water, forcing families from their homes and disrupting normal life. Many victims remain stranded with little access to relief, as homes, belongings and livelihoods have been washed away.

Residents in several affected villages and urban localities alleged that relief supplies have reached only a limited number of people. While some areas reportedly received food packets and bottled water, many others claimed they were yet to receive even basic necessities.

Among the worst-hit areas are Wards 1 to 10 of Nazira town, Teteliguri, Bogoriguri, parts of Bihubar Panchayat, Bamunpukhuri, Maut Gaon, Koch Gaon, Rajapul, Sundarpukhuri, Lakhimijan, Ligiripukhuri, Naga Gaon and Hulal Katoni.

Flood victims also levelled serious allegations against the administration, claiming that relief distribution has been uneven and influenced by political considerations. The allegations could not be independently verified.

The claims have fuelled growing resentment among affected residents, who have accused the authorities of failing to ensure fair and timely distribution of relief materials during one of the worst flood disasters to hit the Dikhow river basin in recent years.
