Gurgaon celebrates Rongali Bihu

Rongali Bihu celebrated with much fun fare with the onset of Spring in the month of ‘Bohag’ of Assamese calendar is the most cherished festival of Assam. In the same tune, Assam Association Gurgaon along with the people hailing from Assam as well as people, who loves Assam, celebrated ‘Rongali Bihu’ with a cultural evening on 13th April, 2014 at DLF Phase-I Community Centre Gurgaon. The evening was attended by the entire Assames Diaspora from NCR of Delhi and the dignitaries included Nripendra Kumar Bharali, Director (HR&BD), Oil India Ltd., Justice Dr. Mukundakam Sharma, Chancellor, Lalbahadur Shastri Rashtriya  Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, Kumar Sanjay Krishna, IAS, Joint Secretary, Dept. of Disinvestment, Govt. of India, T C Sarma, General Manager, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Assamese Singer Manisha Hazarika, T P Khaund , IAS, Principal Adviser to the Govt. of Mizoram, Ms. Arunita Phukan, IRS, J P Saikia, IAS and Bhagya Kalita, Vetern Businessman.

The day started with Painting Competition for Kids and Rs. 30,000/- Prizemoney Bihuwoti Competition. The First, Second and Third Prize winner of Bihuwoti Competition were Himadri Rani Chetia, Swapnasaya Saikia and  Jhilmil Pathak respectively.

The Cultural Evening was dedicated to the renowned Assamese Laureate ‘Sahiyarathi’ Lakshminath Bezbaroa. The cultural evening started with a chorus by the ladies of Assam Association Gurgaon namely, Ashalata Bhuyan, Rajashri Kashyap, Mimun Das, Kongkona Mahanta, Reena Sharma, Karavi Sharma, Shakuntala Devi, Mala Sharma, Purnima Baruah, Korobi Bhuyan, Nandita Sharma, Mitali Das, Sangeeta Baruah,  Ulupi Kalita,  Mridusmita Kakoty accompanied by  Debojit Das. The Bihu Hunsori was presented by ‘Bordoichila Bihu’ team of Asomi Cultural Centre, Gurgaon. This was followed by lighting up of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries present, accompanied by the Mridul Bhuyan, President of Assam Association Gurgaon. The next event was Bihu dance by Bihuwoti first prize winner Himadri Rani Chetia from Jaipur, who enthralled the viewers with her dancing skills. It was succeeded by a few melodious songs rendered by Debojit Das. The evening audience was then brought to a festive mood by dance recital by Assamese Actress Tanvi Sharma. President of Assam Association Gurgaon, Mridul Bhuyan offered the ‘Vote of Thanks to all the guests and sponsors of the cultural evening. The highlight of the evening was a theme show ‘Aami Asomiya’ orchested by about 72 participants from various parts of the world depicting the rich cultural heritage of Assam as well as the contemporary Assam, which was conceived, directed & written by Shivajee Das, Arunav Gogoi, Siddhanta Kashyap and Dr. Auditya Ranjan Dutta.

Following this, the main attraction of the evening, Jitul Sonowal, Assamese singing icon enthralled the viewers dancing to his tune by presenting one after another of his mesmerizing Assamese songs. The evening culminated with a authentic Assamese Dinner and will be remembered by the Assamese Diaspora of the Millenium city of Gurgaon for a long time to come.

The much-hyped efforts for preservation of ancient monuments seems to have failed to reach a section of people. A section of these must-see monuments is languishing in dying agony. Information Forum, umbrella organization of RTI activists of Assam, staged protest in front of the Morigaon district Deputy Commissioner office on Saturday, demanding arrest of the killer of Atikur Rahman, an RTI activist of Lahorighat locality of Morgaon district. Rahman’s body with injure marks on head was recovered on January 15 in a remote road side area of Lahorighat. His family alleged that some influential people were behind his murder as he continued fight against corruption of local PRI system. The was stated in a press release.          
A five-day event “Festival of Tibetan Art and Culture” will be held at the Kalakshetra Guwahati from February 2-6, 2014. His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be present on the occasion. Pongyong Tekchai, a collection of articles, written by noted  writer Rajiv Ahmed and published by Sampriti Prakashan, was released on Mondy at a  function organised in Guwahati Press club. The book was inaugurated by senior journalist Hyder Hussain and the meeting was presided over by veteran journalist Dhirendranath Chakarvorty. Inagurating the book journalist Hussain hoped that the book will able to feed up the needs of voracious readers’ community of Assamese language. Veteran journalist Chakorvorty opined that it is high to practise literary culture in the state.
