Defying an inclement weather national flags are fluttering in the sky across the state on Friday on the 68-th Independence Day. People of all walks of life are celebrating the Day with much pomp and gaiety from the morning.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi led the state in the celebration of the red letter day. Braving incessant rains, Gogoi unfurled the national tricolor at the veterinary Playground in Khanapara at 9 in the morning before taking the salute of the police, army, para military forces.
In his address under the tricolour, Gogoi made a slew of announcement for the economically weaker sections apart from a special scheme for the tea tribes.
He further said that his government is committed to the all round development of the state and its people. Cultural programes are also lined up on the occasion.
Earlier amid tight security, Gogoi along with his wife Dolly Gogoi arrived in the playground to be greeted by the top prominent citizens along with the top ranked police and civil officials.
Reports of Independence Day celebrations are also pouring in from all districts and sub divisions. This is apart from the flag hoisting in some other public places.
