A vast area measuring nearly 90,000 hectares belonging to Assam is being illegally occupied by the the neighbouring Nagaland, Mozoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
According to information, Nagaland tops the list occupying an area measuring 66,241.69 hectares which belongs to Assam. Nagaland is followed by Arunachal Pradesh in 13,184.88 hectares. Next comes Meghalaya which has been illegal encroached an area measuring 5,873.92 hectares. Mizoram is also not lagging behind. The neighbouring state has been occupying altogether 1,986 hectares of land of Assam.
What is more startling is that there has been encroachment in reserve forest areas in Sonitpur and North Lakhimpur districts by Arunachal Pradesh. Thee include three forest reserve areas falling in Lakhimpur district Ronga (1009 hectare), 710 hectares in Kakoi and 760 hectares in Dulong reserve forest areas.
Besides, Sonitpur district’s Balipara forest area is losing 10 hectares to Arunachal Pradesh, 1500 hectares in Bihali while the area of Chilogijan forest area encroached by Arunachal Pradesh is 40 hectares.
