A US team is on a visit to Assam to find out the mortal remains of their four soldiers who died in air crash during the World War II. Led by David Gooch, the team under the banner of Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is visiting Sivasagar district.

The focus of attention is a tiny village in Charaideo where the US team along with the officials of archeological survey of India is searching the remains of the US soldiers. The team starts search operation from Wednesday till November 5. The mortal remains, if found, would be handed over to the family members.

The crash took place on June 26 in 1944 when the US war plane crashed with eleven soldiers in Kothiakhunda village. Bodies of seven soldiers were recovered. Four others were left out because of an unavoidable circumstances.

The US Government is currently working with Rimo Expeditions to recover the mortal remains of four crewmen still missing from the crash of the US Army Air Force B-29 bomber "Eileen", which crashed in Assam's Sivasagar district on 26 June 1944. The missing airmen are 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh of Illinois, Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke of Michigan, S/Sgt. Donal C. Aiken of Washington state, and T/Sgt. John M. Larkins of Tennessee (sources: C. M. Quinn, The Aluminum Trail (1989), National World War II Memorial). We pray that their remains will be recovered and returned to their families. CM's stock taking meet on COVID19 sans Himanta

Guwahati : Assam chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had a stock taking video conference with all district authorities in the time of COVID-19. IMA allege anomalies in Covid-19 management

Guwahati: The Indian Medical Association has strongly criticized the COVID19 care and management in Assam and suggested the government to formulate measures taking the medical experts into confidence. In a letter to health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,  IMA's state unit alleged a number of anomalies in the system which why,  the number of infected doctors and health workers has gone up on every passing day. The association further questioned the government's intention on the violation of ICMR guidelines for home treatment of the asymptomic patients.

Prisoners stage dharna, demand Akhil's release

Guwahati: As many as 1200 prisoners at the Guwahati Central Jail staged sharna on Saturday demanding release of Akhil Gogoi whom the police arrested 7 months back in a number of cases. The prisoners thronged near the jail gate and started Sharna and shouted slogans raising their demands. The further treatened to intensify their demands if the peasant leader is not released under relevant sections of the laws.  Gogoi was jailed under NSA and later police imposed a number of sections to keep him in jail.

No let-up in Baghjan inferno

There is no let up in the inferno at gas well in Baghjan which caught fire on Tuesday after ten days of blow out.  Around 1600 families in 1.5 km radius have been camping at safe distance and most of them alleged to have lost their houses in the inferno. Local residents have further alleged lost of paddy fields which won't be cultivable for the next many years. Firefighters dead in huge inferno at gas well

TINSUKIA: Two fire fighters died as they were trying to douse a huge inferno at a gas well in Tinsukia district on Tuesday even as the fury continues to spread out of control sending statewide shock and anger. The inferno took place on Tuesday when a team of experts brought from Singapore were trying to defuse smokes of gas bellowing from the gas well belonging to Oil India Limited at Baghjan. Guwahati: Dhritiraj Bastav Kalita from Barampur Jatiya Vidyalaya, a private school stole the show in the HSLC examination, 2020 conducted by the Secondary Board Education, Assam in February.
