New tourist guest house at Bhairabkunda
The inauguration of a tourist guest house inside JFMC man made forest at Bhairabkunda near Assam- Bhutan- Arunachal junction has been appreciated by nature loving people of the district. The tourist guest house was formally inaugurated by Sadhana Hojai, Deputy Commissioner, Udalguri at a small and simple ceremony on November 12.The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Dibakor Doley,ADC,Udalguri; Girindra Adhikari,DFO,Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri; environmental activist Jayanta Kumar Das, who is also the Hony.Wildlife Warden of Udalguri; and Satya Boro, Range Officer,Nonai Range Office;journalists of Udalguri Ram Upadhyay and Mossaddique Hussain also attended the ceremony. The tourist guest house has been build with an amount sanctioned by Thaneswar Malakar,while he was serving as the Deputy Commissioner in Udalguri.
It needs mention that JFMC (Joint Forest Management Committee) Bhairabkunda was the brainchild of Naba Kumar Bordoloi and villagers of six villages bordering Assam-Bhutan-Arunachal. The work had been started way back in 2005. Now the forest has more than 11 lakhs saplings belonging to various valuable species. “We have been planting more than eleven lakhs of valuable saplings since 2005. The lands escaped human encroachment only because of its barren and sandy character. Now the landscape spreading in an area of 550 Hecters has been attracting various species of animals or birds including wild elephants,leopards, pythons, peacocks etc.” so said Esmail Daimari a hard working official of JFMC. He said with more support from government and people the lands could have been transformed to a paradise.He requested nature loving people to visit JFMC,Bhairabkunda.

The carcass of a 80 years old wild tusker has been found at Phulungjhar Kolbari of Udalguri district near Indo-Bhutan border at 12.30 pm on December 14,taking death toll of wild elephants to 8 in 2012. Annual examination in Tarabari LP school in Bhergaon sub-division near Tangla could not held due to absence of all the teachers. According to information examinees had to return home without appearing their annual examination after waiting for hours in the school on December 5. In another tragic incident,one Joseph Munda (21) s/o late Batras Munda of village Nepalibasti near Nasonsali under Paneri Police Station has been killed by wild elephant at Gitibari area at 8.30 pm on December 2 taking death toll to 7 human beings this year only. According to information he along with other tried to chase away a herd of wild elephants damaging their paddy. Khalingduar Reserve Forest in Udalguri district has witnessed severe destruction of forests along with the presence of hundreds of wild elephants damaging paddy and houses of villagers. Although the matters have taken serious turn,forest department with just seven or eight people could neither chase away wild elephants nor stop smugglers involved in poaching or tree felling. The recovery of a dead female wild elephant at Paneri in Udalguri district has caused serious concern among nature loving people. The 8 years old female wild elephant was seen in a tea garden drain of Paneri TE in the morning hours of November 23. In order to strengthen the environmental movement in Assam, 25 Assam based environmental NGOs met over a day-long programme at Lakshmiram Barua Sadan on October 20 and decided to form an environmental NGO Forum to deal with all environmental issues of the state.
