The 1st Elite Men's National Boxing Championship at the Divisional Sports Complex in Nagpur Maharashtra witnessed another mouthwatering display of agility and skill. In one of the most anticipated bouts of the day, M Thomas of Manipur took Assam boxer Govind Thapa on in the light welter weight division. Thapa unlike his usual self decided to let his opponent make the first move, knowing that Thomas is strong a strong counter attacker. The tactics paid off, putting the Assam boxer on the back foot.

Almost every time Govind charged in, Thomas got the better of him with some swift combinations, doing the most damage in the second round. Govind tried hard to get back in the game in the final three minutes of play, but Thomas was up to the task. In the end the Manipur fighter went on to make his place in the finals of the championship with a comprehensive 2-1 win on points.

Govind Thapa had bagged a silver during the 2007 National Games held in Guwahati.
