It was 13th April, 2008, a hot sunny April afternoon. In spite of that, as soon as the evening approached, people from Assam as well as the well-wishers of Assam, currently staying in the millennium city of Gurgaon and also people from the National Capital Region of Delhi started congregating at the HUDA Community Hall at Sector-46, Gurgaon to celebrate the most cherished festival of Assam i.e. 'Rongali Bihu'. As soon as the Chief Guest of the evening, Honorable Justice of Supreme Court of India Dr. Mukundakam Sharma along with his better half arrived, the cultural evening started with lighting of lamp by the chief guest. He along with Shri Binoy Sharma, Ex-CMD of Oil India Limited was flanked by President of Assam Association Gurgaon, Shri Mridul Bhuyan for 'Lighting of Lamp' and with that the cultural evening started at about 7:45 PM.
The 'Lighting of Lamps' was followed with the graceful dance recital of 'Ganesh Vandana' by Ms. Banditta Nath. The major attractions of the cultural evening were elating performance by 'Bihu Team', a regular of 'Sankar Dev Kalakhetra' of Guwahati, who were in all practicality 'air-lifted' from Guwahati at the nick of time and Renowned singer from Assam, Ms. Luna Bharali Das. Other captivating events of the evening were melodious presentation of Assamese songs by Mr. Debojit Das, entertaining dances by Ms. Akankshya Bhuyan, Bihu Songs by Mrs. Rim Pathak and exhilarating Bihu dance by Mrs. Smrita Barua, who is an Executive Member of Assam Association Gurgaon. Finally, the evening came to an end with a spectacular presentation of songs by the guest artist Ms. Luna Bharali Das and 'Vote of Thanks' by the President, Assam Association Gurgaon. The cultural evening culminated with an exquisite Assamese Dinner consisting of 'Maati Dal', 'Mixed Vegetables', 'Maangso', 'Masor Tenga', Murighonto', 'Bilahir Tok', 'Bangenar Bor' and 'Paayas'. There is no doubt in my mind that we the people of Assam have proved our presence in this world today and the day is not far that our heritage and culture will be known to this world as the best.
Normal life in parts of the state has been thrown out of gear under the impact of the day-long bandh called by a minority organization to protest the BTAD violence. A CBI team grills Pradeep Kumar Brahma a d after the West Kokrajhar MLA was arrested from his residence in Dotoma in connection with the BTAD violence where 80 people lost their lives in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska and Dhubri districts during the last couple of weeks. Peeved at Pradeep Kumar Brahma’s arrest in connection with BTAD violence, BPF on Thursdy threatened to withdraw support from the Tarun Gogoi government. BPF leaders have alleged that Brahma is a victim of political conspiracy and that his arrest was unwanted. They said that AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal is the main culprit of the entire gory episode. According to them, police could not produce any letter of consent from the Assam Assembly Speaker when Pradeep Kumar Brahma was arrested.

Police steps up efforts to stop exodus of Assamese people from Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Tamil Nadu. Talking to Assam Times, top police officials said that it would be ensured that those who returned to the north east in panic from other parts of the country go back.
Karnataka deputy Chief Minister R Ashoka is set to visit north eastern states very soon to invite the people who left the state at the height of mass exodus. Ashoka said that there was no violence in the state and that the North-East people who fled the city for their home-towns following rumours of attacks should return. He said that the tight security cover deployed in the city, including deployment of Rapid Action Force, would continue for another week. He said that the leaders of Nagaland and Manipur have already invited me. If Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi invites him, he would be visiting that state very soon.
