Prof Taher passes away

The death of eminent educationist, social scientist, renowned geographer and author Mohammad Taher has been widely condoled across the state. Professor Taher breathed his last in a private hospital in Guwahati yesterday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 83. 

After obtaining his PhD degree from the Auckland University, Newzealand he joined the Gauhati University as a teacher. Described as a doyen of Indian Geography,Mohammad Taher retired from the Geography Department of the Gauhati University as Head and Dean of Faculty of Science in the 1990s. He authored more than 20 text books for geography students besides books on other subjects.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Amir Khan would be the brand ambassador to give the state’s tourism sector a fresh lease of life.Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi said that he had a telephonic talk with the bollywood actor and director who told him that he was really impressed with Assam and its people. According to the chief minister, formalities are underway to declare Amir khan as the brand ambassador for this vital sector. On Friday, transport and tourism minister Chandan Sarkarr said that it was his desire to talk to the actor on behalf of the government.    
Dispur expresses grave concern over the rising insurgent activities along Assam-Meghalaya border. Talking to reporter, chief minister Tarun Gogoi blamed it all on Meghalaya insurgent outfits for the recent massacre at Gendabari.Talking to reporters, Gogoi said that security has been beefed up in these areas bordering Meghalaya to prevent the entry of insurgent elements from the neighbouring state. He said that of late, ULFA has struck deal with the Garo insurgent outfits to monger more trouble.On the other hand, DGP Jayanta Narayan Chaudhury was on a stock-taking visit to the trouble torn areas bordering West Bengal and Meghalaya. 
The Assam government is clearing the decks for updating NRC from December. Disclosing this at a press conference in Dispur, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the central funds for NRC works would be available.Notably, a Supreme Court instruction has forced the Centre to clear the fund for an updated set of NRC while Dispur is in a process to resume the work. The pilot project state four years back. But only to be stopped because of an incident of firing in Barpeta district.AASU, AJYCP have been pressuring the Centre and the state government to update the NRC to help the state detect and deport the Bangladeshi immigrants.      
Good news for cancer patients. Chabua to get a state-of –the- art cancer hospital. This was what chief minister Tarun Gogoi disclosed as he was addressing a press conference in Dispur on SaturdayGogoi said that the hospital would be a giant leap towards giving a relief to the cancer patients whose number has been on the rise. This would be the second cancer hospital in the state after the B Barooah cancer institute.

The Bollywood actor on Saturday visited some rural areas in Balipara in Sonitpur district with his wife Kiran and son Azad.Another film maker Karann Johar left for Mumbai on Saturday morning a day after he toured the the kaziranga National Park Amir Khan and his friends where they were felicitated by forest minister Rockybul Hussain. Later talking to assamtimes, the Raja Hindustani maker said that he is interested to make a film on this state.
The Central Bureau of Investigation is likely to move the Supreme Court a day after Gauhati questioned its validity under the Delhi Police Act, 1963. According to sources, the Centre is weighing options to approach the apex court challenging the Gauhati High Court order. The verdict was passed after the court took up a plea against CBI in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy where the investigation agency chargesheet a BSNL officer in a cheating case to be quashed by the court. Many legal experts across the country called the verdict a shocking.
Bollywood actor-director Amir Khan in on a 5 days personal visit to Assam. Accompanied by his family members, the Loogan director landed at the Salonibari airport at 1 pm on Wednesday and straightly left for the Circuit House where is lodging. On Thursday he celebrated his wife's birthday. Sources told assamtimes that Amir Khan would visit the Kaziranga National park along with some place of interest.
Four persons were killed when a vehicle carrying them to Guwahati collided its head on a scorpio vehicle on its way to Dhemaji on Thusday. The head-on-collision took place in the wee hour on the National Highway 52 at Kocharigaon. Four person on the Guwahati-bound Alto car died on the spot while those inside the Scorpio vehicle were injured to be sent to the hospital.
Yet another alleged incident of gangrape struck Guwahati. The main accused is in police custody. The incident took place at Maligaon where three youths allegedly gangraped and assaulted a 20 year old girl under the flyover at 11 at night. Local residents rescued the girl and caught the main accused who was handed over to the police. But the two others managed to flee from the spot. Later the girl was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College. Apart from interrogating the accused, police are waiting for the medical report to confirm it a case of gangrape.
