Guwahati Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is functioning in a very disorderly manner, as alleged by a section of students, who are the victims of arbitrary decisions of the Centre In charge. A section of students alleged that a centre of a prestigious institution of the country has started playing with the future of the students by violating the prescribed norms of distance education for which the IGNOU was established.
Most of the students who have enrolled for different courses under this centre are bewildered, as their enrolment numbers given by the institution do not connect the Website for any help to them, which show the IDs as invalid. It is alleged that there is only one big hall with laboratory for practical as well as the theoretical classes at this study centre. The classes of all the streams are held in the same hall. The complaints of the students are turned down on certain flimsy ground and nobody is allowed to approach the higher authorities for redressal of their grievances. The students are asked to adjust themselves under the same condition. As a result the institution has been driven out of its main objective of distance education.
The students have complained that the curriculum prescribed by the IGNOU are not followed by this centre and the timings of classes are not regulated properly. IGNOU, being an institution for distance education gives stress on the classes to be held on nonworking days (i.e. Saturdays and Sundays), as it is being held in other centers of the country. But here at Guwahati centre, the classes are held almost daily and for practical classes faculty members area not available on nonworking days. It is also alleged that some of the faculty members insist upon the students to go for the coaching, without which the chances of their success was bleak.
It is alleged that the faculty members including the in charge of the centre are all part timers and have their interest in other institutions. Therefore, they fail to maintain the timings and on most of the occasions the students have to return without attending any class.
Most of the students under IGNOU are from the working classes and are desirous of continuing their studies as this institution provides the facility of distance education. Some students have come here on transfers from other centers and are desirous of continuing their studies without break. But in the prevailing conditions here, they are not in position to attend the classes. They have experience of other centers and wish there should not be any change in the policy of the institution because of the change of the centre. They say that this centre has made the 'mockery of the distance education.'
It is surprising that the Centre director of the institution came to know about the mismanagement in the institution only during a recently held workshop. The students got an opportunity to interact during the session, when their problems were heard sympathetically and the remedy was assured. It is essential for the centre to come up to the mark like other centers in the interest of the students, organization and the country.
