Dada Saheb Phalke awardee filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan today interacted with scribes in Guwahati Press Club. Attending the Guest of the Month programme, Padma Vibhushan Gopalakrishnan argued that regional film industry deserves support from the government. He specially stated that Assam government should patronage the local film industry as it is facing crisis.
Mentioning about Assam and Kerala having lot of similarities including its green landscapes, abundant rains, growing vector-borne diseases and also the lifestyle of the habitants, Gopalakrishnan pointed out that both the States are geographically apart, but the people are emotionally very closed.
The noted film personality has scripted and directed eleven feature films in Malayalam and all of those creations had brought laurels to him and Indian film fraternity.
Gopalakrishnan earlier received Bishwaratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award in a glittering function held in the city yesterday evening. Conferring the award on the internationally acclaimed director, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi termed Bhupen Hazarika a great humanist and a revolutionary.
“A cultural doyen, Bhupen Hazarika forged a synergy among all geographical territories in the country and brought about unity in the country,” said Gogoi adding that he witnessed ‘lot of similarities between Bhupen Hazarika and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’ as both them acted as bridge between Assam and Kerala, though both the Sates are geographically far off.

Congress MP from Koliabor Gaurav Gogoi demandds intervention by Union minister for water resources Uma Bharti’s interventio to release the outstanding central share of flood and erosion management and erosion schemes. Security forces are fanning at Pengeri area in Tinsukia district of Assam in search of four ULFA militants on Monday who are believed to have been hiding to extort money. Acting on a tip off Tinsukia police and army jawans conducted a raid in the area on Monday. But the miliants managed to flee after exchange of firing for a brief period of time in the evening. A hardcore GNLA militant died at an encounter with police in Goalpara district of Assam on Monday. A police constable also sustained serious injury in the heavy exchange of firing which laster for nearly one hour. Assam police have to hang their heads in shame when a senior officcer was caught for aiding a gang of criminals to loot cash from an ATM van last week. He was none other than Bhupen Das. Police have recovered yet another amount of Rs 15 lakh from Goalpara tracing the Brinks Arya loot case. A joint team of Guwahati and Goalpara police seized the entire amount from a women in Krishnai hours after her son in law was arrested in this connection. Her son so in law Nayan Barman who along with six others looted the HDFC cash from a Brinks Arya vehicle last week. Five of them including the driver were caught a day afte they seized Rs 1.15 crore from their possesion.

Another middle-aged journalist, this time it is in poll-bound Bihar, has lost his life to the perpetuators. Mithilesh Pandey, 40, was shot dead on 25 October 2015 in his hometown under Gaya district. According to the family source, the miscreants (two masked persons) entered the victim’s house on Saturday evening and shot at him to death.
