Tremors struck again

Three back to back tremors struck no less panic on Tuesday forcing the authorities to sound alert across the state.

The state rattled at 12.37 when a 7.4 magnitude originated in Kathmandu. This was followed by the second one tremor which was of mild 3.4 intensity in Richter scale at 1.20 in the afternoon. The epicenter was Tezpur.

Yet another earthquake spread panic among the people 30 minutes later forcing the people to come out of their high rise buildings.

In Guwahati also, the panic stricken people rushed to the roads and open space as soon as the tremors were felt. Cracks are believed to have surfaced in the Anandoram Barooah Flyover in Guwahati apart from three buildings. There is no report of any casualty till now.

Kids charred to death in Basistha

GUWAHATI: Three minor boys were charred to death when suspected miscreants set afire at least ten huts in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place at Patorchi area near Basistha in the wee hours where unidentified miscreants who have been terrorizing these people for the last couple of weeks set on fire the huts.   Local residents told www.assamtimes.com that the three kids could not come out since they were in deep sleep and their parents only managed to come out of the burning huts. A team of police from Basistha arrived in the spot and the situation was brought under control.           

Rhino poacher dead in Pobitora

JAGIROAD: A Naga rhino poachers died at  fierce gun battle with the forest guards in Pobitora on Tuesday. The gunfight which lasted for nearly one hour took place in the wee hours. Acting on a tip off that a gang of 4-5 poachers managed to sneak in to the sanctuary forest guards started fanning in the vulnerable areas where the encounter took place. One of the rhino poachers died and four others are believed to have vanished from the spot.

Abductors held, Manvik rescued safely

GUWAHATI: Finally the high voltage drama has ended.Manvik Surana has been rescued from Bhaskarnagar nearly 7 hours after the minor boy was kidnapped from the Kid Veda School premised. According to information, acting on some clues the police team tracking the case picked up a person who was known to Manvik's father. After marathon interrogation at an undisclosed location the interrogation found some lead and raided a house in Fatashil Ambari where the minor boy was rescued. Police have arrested a woman and two youths who were planning to demand cash from Manvik's parents. Details are awaited.

GUWAHATI: The policemen probing the sensation abduction of a Guwahati school boy are believed to have been interrogating a youth in this connection. Sources say in Guwahati that a team of senior CID officials have been questionings the person at an undisclosed location.Identified as Manvik Surana, the son of a top ranked city based contractor was kidnapped by the miscreants from the Kid Veda School premises in the afternoon.

Unidentified miscreants kidnapped the minor son of a city based contractor from the school triggering shock and sensation across the state on Monday.    According to police, Manvik Surana, the minor student of Kid Veda in Bhangagarh area was taken away by the abductors from the school premises in the name of his family members at 1.30 in the afternoon. Secret killing rerun in BTAD

KOKRAJHAR: In yet another case of secret killing rerun, miscreants killed a priest after he was invited with a phone call in Chirang district on Saturday. According to information, Pradeep Upadhyay, a local resident of Ulubari went out after he received a call in the evening. But he never returned. Local residents spotted the body of the priest inside a nearyby jungle in the morning. Police investigation is going on. Various organizations and individuals have condemned the incident and demand judicial probe to ascertain the circumstance.     

Rs 70,000 cr hope in investors’ summit

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government claimed to have received a hefty Rs 70,000 crore investment at the end of the global investors’ summit in Guwahati on Sunday.   Talking to media government officials say investment are set to pour in a number of vital sectors which include petroleum, telecom, health and tourism. “We have struck initial 200 deal with the investors from home and abroad to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore,” said an official.   He said tourism sector alone is set to get a huge boost with a total investment proposal of Rs 2,347 crore.

Three held in coal trader attack case

DUDHNOI: Police on Sunday have arrested three persons a day after they allegedly shot at a coal trader in Jogighopa in Goalpara district on Saturday. Hours after the coal trader Azmul Haque sustained injury in shoot out at Kabaitary at night policemen started investigation and arrested the trio. A team of senior police officials has been interrogating the arrested persons in this connection. Stunning revelations are believed to have surface pertaining to the nefarious illegal coal trade in the state where a section of political leaders and police top guns are involved.
