Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take up the issue of construction of dams on the river Brahmaputra river Chinese President Xi Jinping who is on a visit to New Delhi.In a letter to Modi, the chief minister expressed grave serious concerns over the move to build big dams by China over the mighty river that threatens to would adversely impact downstream flows.Gogoi said that construction of the dams is likely to trigger fresh concerns on the flow of Brahmaputra downstream.
Police on Thursday seized two licensed revolvers from Shankar Baruah’s residence a day after the former DGP shot himself dead. According to police who carried out formal investigation on Thursday at his residence in Ujanbazar with the help of CID and FSL, he killed himself with one of the revolvers. The team collected fingerprints and one used cartridge of a .32-bore revolver apart from obtaining the photographic and videographic records of the spot. Shankar Baruah’s “unfortunate death” is a set back for CBI probe into the Saradha scam where the former DGP was an accused. Barua, who shot himself to death on Wednesday, was an important part of the probe into the multi crore scam. According to sources, Barua played a big role to provide security to Saradha chief Sudipta Sen and his close associates. A former minister and Baruah had several rounds of late night meetings with Sen and one of his close associate mediated by Sadananda Gogoi who is in CBI custody. The conspiracy took final shap when Baruah met Sudipta Sen at the initiatives of Sadananda Gogoi---closed to Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The mortal remains of Shankar Baruah consigned to flames hours after the former DGP shot himself at his residence in Guwahati on Wednesday.His last rites were performed at the Navagraha cremation ground in the evening.Before the government officials and the Police officials paid tributes to his mortal remains at the 4th Assam Police Battalion headquarters at Kahilipara.Chief secretary Jitesh Khosla laid a wreath on behalf of chief minister Gogoi.
