It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.
The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

There is sign of marginal let-up in the overall flood scene on Friday. The flood waters start receding trend in the worst hit areas of Goalpara and Kamrup Districts. The waterlevels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries across the state are also receding marginally.In a bid to speed up dispatch relief materials, the North East Frontier Railway is running two special trains till September 30 between New Bongaigaon - Goalpara and Guwahati to Chayygaon.The administration has set up 88 temporary relief camps in Goalpara District and 54 in Kamrup District to accommodate over 2 lakh people. But the road communication between Guwahati and Goalpara, however, remains cut off.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has sought Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre to tide over the grim flood situation where at least 40 people lost their lives during the last 5 days. In a letter to prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, Gogoi said that the huge extent of damage of the flood fury has forced him to pin hopes on this huge amount. Union home minister Rajnath Singh will be on a stock taking visit to Assam next week. Singh who is monitoring the entire situation from New Delhi is in constant touch with Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sarbananda Sonowal who are on visit to the flood-hit state on Thursday.Singh has asked the duo to apprise him of the situation on their return. On Wednesday Singh assured Tarun Gogoi of all possible help to tide over the situation when he talked to the chief minister over telephone.
The Centre is not looking after Assam and J&K differently. This was what Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju told reporters in Lakhimpur on Thursday.Hours after chief minister alleged that the Centre took up Assam and J&K flood differently, Rijiju who hails from Arunachal Pradesh said that Centre is helping the state get out of the blues.He further said that the Assam government has experience of handling the situation from its past experience and that flood is new problem in J&K where the government has hardly any experience.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi accused the Centre of not taking up flood situation seriously. Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function in Guwahati on Thursday, Gogoi alleged that the Centre was looking after Assam and Jammu and Kashmir differently. Identified as Mohan Satnami and Gonesh Pator, the duo are being charged with killing Mintu after hiring his vehicle on September 19. The flash flood has forced the Northeast Frontier Railway to cancel eight trains. It has further diverted seven others on Thursday. Dhaka is waiting for early settlement of the land deal with New Delhi. This was what Bangladesh high commissioner in India Tariq A. Karim said in Guwahati. In his interaction at a FICCI function in the city on Wednesday, he said that said ratification of the India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement is the only way to help both the countries solve the problem of illegal migration. He further said it would help India and Bangladesh boost bilateral ties. Karim said ratification of the land boundary agreement is in India’s own interest.
The Centre has assured the Assam government of all help to deal with the flood fury that claimed 30 people during the last four days.In his telephonic conversation with chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday, Union home minister Rajnath Singh said that the Centre would extend all possible assistance to the state for rescue and relief of flood-affected areas.Rescue and relief teams operations are underway at Boko, Goalpara, Guwahati, Sonitpur, North Lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dhemaji.
