Adivasi session begins in Kokrajhar

Over 1000 delegates from various district of Assam thronged Kokrajhar to attend the 12th Adivasi Mahasabha which got underway on Friday. Organised by the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam, the event got off to a colourful start at Magurmari High School ground in Kokrajhar.

Former minister Pramila Rani Brahma attended the first session and welcomed the delegates. AASAA vice president Stephen Lakra told reporters that more than 1000 delegates reached the venue. He said that the session will discuss culture, language and development spirits of the Adivasi community in the state. Dr Rameswar Oraon, chairman of national commission for Scheduled Tribes would attend as chief guest on October 4.

A cadre of the NDFB-S was apprehanded by security forces at an operation raided from Selekhaguri area under Serfanguri PS of Kokrajhar district this morning. A joint team of security forces belonging to Police, Army and CRPF Cobra battalion manage to arrest a cadre of the militant outfit organization this morning around 5.30 am from Selekhaguri in Kokrajhar district. The arrested cadre was identified as Debo Boro, 36; of Selekhaguri m who has been involved with outfit organisation since many years.A 7.65 pistol (factory made), an Air Gun, two live bullets, two combat dress, two mobile handset and three CDs were recovered from him.

BPF is gearing up for Assembly elections early next year gathering more and more support in BTAD areas. Very recently more than 5000 supporters from PCDR, BPPF and Congress joined in the party in Kokrajhar alone.Talking to Assam Times, BPF MLA from Kokrajhar west Pradip Kumar Brahma said more and more people are joining the party very soon. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said his government will not impose ban on sale of meat. In a statement issued on Sunday, Gogoi said the ban on sale of meat by some states is a retrogressive step as it violates the rights of the people to eat whatever food they like.Gogoi described the ban as decline from a better to a worse state as "people have the right to choose the food they prefer to eat." However, Gogoi said, his statement should not construed as promotion of non-vegetarianism. "A vegetarian has the same right as a non-vegetarian to eat whatever food he or she prefers," he said.
