Durgapur, the name of a sleepy hamlet nestled in Kaziranga National park is throbbing with the activities of a full fledged hub of a green revolution. Courtesy Krishka Mukti Sangram Samity. The spotlight falls on a tiny plot of 16 bighas in the area, the nerve centre of all activities to open a new leaf in the state’s economic activities.
Named as the Kaziranga National Orchid Park, the entire area is teeming with many workaholic people who are joining the revolution fetching a ray of hope for the people of Assam. Dozens of local youths are preserving over 500 endangered spices of orchids in the north eastern region which are blooming brightly.
These are apart from over 200 endangered varieties of rice growing in the tiny plot. Local fruits are also set to draw no less attention of the Kaziranga visitors who can break the monotony of humdrum domesticity.
Another striking feature of the venture of the availability of traditional Assamese lunch. These include mouth watering Kumol chawol, cured, pastry much to the delight of the tourists listening the traditional Assamese bihu songs, borgeet, jikir et al.
“We do not stick to agitation only. It is not our way of life. Apart from our voice of protest we are trying to open a new leaf to show the road for self reliance, preservation of our beautiful but endangered fruits, rice and vegetables,” said Akhil Gogoi, the man behind revolutionary venture.
Another KMSS activist said, “it would further send a good signal outside the state as outsiders look Assam and its people differently. We want to change the way the people think and act.”
Once opened, it would a good source of sustainable income for many local families in and around the world heritage site.
