Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

The Shillong police have picked up one Akeep Warjri of Mawprem Dymmiew and  charged him with stealing a music system in Mawkhar area on Tuesday. After days of will-he-won’t-he, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma put in his paper as Jalukbari on Tuesday. Dr Sarma, who has already joined BJP last month, handed over his resignation letter before Assam Assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi at his official residence in Dispur in the afternoon. Dr Sarma, who had been doing dissidence against Tarun Gogoi as chief minister unofficially join the saffron party towards the end of August when he met BJP president Amit Shah in his New Delhi residence.

There seems to be no respite for Gopinath Das as the Gauhati High Court rejected an anticipatory bail petition for the Boko AIUDF MLA in connection with the minor domestic help case. The court, however, asked police to submit the case diary required in the next hearing slated for September 22. On the other hand, police have been carrying out raids in a number of places in search of the MLA who has been absconding.The police have registered a case against the MLA on charges of wrongfully confining a minor girl and also a case under the POCSO Act.
A day after recruiting 13 new parliamentary secretaries chief minister Tarun Gogoi is set to induct two minister afresh in is cabinet. The beneficiaries are Gautom Roy and Siddique Ahmed.Gogoi is understood to have told the duo over telephone on Monday. Governor PB Acharya will administer oath of office and secrecy to both Roy and Ahmed on Wednesday.The 13 parliamentary secretaries will take oath from the chief minister in the same function at the Raj Bhawan. Siddique, the close associate of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was shunted out last year after Dr Sama resigned before the governor. The Shillong police have fined three persons Rs 5000 each alleging offence of nuisance under the influence of alcohol in two different case in the capital city. The first incident took place on August 19 at night  when police picked up Sujjit Singh for nuisance under the influence of alcohol at Keating Road. The CJM court in Shillong convicted him with a fine of Rs.5, 000. A bee keeping awareness and sericulture development training evokes no less response from local farmers at Tezu area in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. A Lok Adalat in West Siang has disposed off 24 cases organized in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on Saturday. Presided over by CJM Tage Halley, the court took 57cases for hearing out of which 24 criminal compoundable to be disposed off on the spot.
