Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

Three girls met watery grave when the boat ferrying them capsized on the river Burhi Dihing at Tengakhat on Thursday.The tragic incident took place in the evening when the boat was ferrying 5 people.  In a major setback for Nagaland, the Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain the plea to adjourn the hearing of the border dispute with Assam. A division bench of the top court comprising Justice T S Thakur and Justice R Banumathi said, “the issue is decade old and we want to make it clear that no further adjournment will be granted." Then the Nagaland government told the court that the advocate general was new and that he needed time to study the deadlock. But the case will figure on September 7.The court had said that the border dispute between Assam and Nagaland could be resolved either by deciding the law suit or by referring it for arbitration. 
A massive inferno reduced properties worth lakhs of rupees to ashes in Basistha area on Thursday forcing the authorities to deploy army to deal with the situation. Originated at a hut, the devastating inferno started spreading in the evening at the Nepalibasti area at a stone’s distance from the police station. The explosion of at least 15 LPG cylinders aggravated the situation where more than ten fire tenders found it quite difficult to bring the situation under control. As many as fifteen people are feared to have sustained injury to be rushed to the GMCH for treatment. Details are awaited.
Amid an escalating controversy over the inclusion of all voters in the updated NRC, the Supreme Court is all set to review process on July 14.Dispur has written to New Delhi advocating the inclusion of those who are voters by virtue of birth.A top court bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi will review the progress where Dispur’s plea is likely to come up.On the other hand, APW along with some other organizations are expected to go all out against the plea. Now all eyes are fixed on July 14.   
A senior cabinet minister courted yet another controversy on Thursday when he strongly advocated the inclusion of outsiders in the NRC who came across from the border for the sake of their lives.He was none other than panchayat and rural development minister Rockybul Hussain who told reporters that those who came across from the border to escape their impending death should find place in the updated National Registrar of Citizens.Hussain’s statement assumes significance amid the hue and cry over the recent decision to move the Centre seeking the inclusion of all people who are voters by virtue of birth. 
After weeks of will-it-won’t it, the Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the criminal proceedings against Subramanian Swamy who was to pay heavy price for his hate speech in Karimganj.The BJP ideologue is likely to move the Karimganj court seeking the complaint to be quashed at any moment from now.The Karimganj lower court last month issued non bailable arrest warrant against Dr Swamy for his hate speech forcing him to move the top court seeking stay of criminal procedure.     A bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice M Y Eqbal, on Thursday is learnt to have stayed criminal proceedings against BJP leader Subramanian Swamy who challenged the hate speech law.

 As the assembly polls are round the corner the Congress government starts wooing the voters at the cost of the public exchequer.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi distributed loans to at least 3600 self help groups at a function organized by the panchayat and rural development department in Guwahati on Thursday.In his address before distributing in cheques, Gogoi and urged hoped that the loans would help the self help groups in a big way.According to sources, the loans need not be returned and the self groups would be utilized the fund at their own discretion.    
Caught in a grim controversy chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked chief secretary VK Pipppersenia to monitor the NRC preparation process across the state.The chief minister’s office issued the order after people in large number hit the streets alleging gross anomalies and helplessness to fill up the NRC forms.A section of officials deployed in the process is alleged to have been demanding money to help them complete the task.
