Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

The induction of 4 new faces would take time for chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi told Assam Times in New Delhi that he did not talk to Rahul Gandhi on Sunday as the party vice president was busy with kisan rally. "This time I will submit the list only. One person was killed and many houses were ravaged when a powerful storm hit Lakhimpur district on Sunday. The storm began at 4.30 in the wee hours damaging over 200 houses apart from disrupting surface communication in a huge area of the district. The worst-hit area is Nahoroni where one person died in the storm. Identified as Khirud Bora, he died as the house collapsed on him under the impact of the calamity. It would require 3 or 4 days to restore communications.

The stage is set for chief minister Tarun Gogoi to expand his cabinet again. Talking to Assam Times in the sidelines of a bihu function in Gurgaon on Saturday, Gogoi said he was waiting for Rahul Ghandhi's green signal to complete the formality. "I am trying to meet Rahulji on Sunday to get his seal of approval. Then I can proceed," Gogoi told Assam Times in the sidelines of the Bihu function. Gogoi who arrived in New Delhi will attend the kishan rally. 
An ambitious plan is on the anvil to uplift Kamakhya temple. This was what Mahendra Singh told reporters when the union minister was on a visit to the ancient temple on Saturday. Singh announced a Rs 4 crore fund to give the shrine a fresh lease of life. Singh said the Centre would set up projects in all states to popularize Dr Bhupen Hazarika across the nation. 
A local court in Guwahati remanded Anil Chauhan to 5 days police custody again on Saturday. The Kamrup CJM allowed Basistha police to take the carlifter in its remand when he was produced before it in connection with a few cases pending against him. A team of senior police officers continues to gril Chauhan at Basistha police station.
More and more trouble await Rumi Nath after she was sent to jail. Dispur police rescued a child labourer from her official residence on Saturday. Acting on a tip off, a team of Dispur with the help of Childline conducted a raid at her official residence where a minor girl worker was found to have been working. Police have registered a case against the MLA for illegally keeping the minor.
KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi threatens to go all out against toll gates on the national highways saying that the roads are constructed from the peoples' fund. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, Gogoi blamed both Delhi and Dispur for allowing the cartels of eggs, fish and meat in the state. He said, "without centre's help Dispur can't set up toll gates." 
In yet another incident that triggers controversy across the state, organizers of a bihu function in Guwahati did not allow artist Zubilee Barua to perform on the stage. The function was organized in Chandmari where the singer was not allowed to peform only for refusing to dress in traditional attire. The organizers said that they earlier requested the singer to perform in traditional attire which was not followed.
