North East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS), a grassroots development organisation based in Jorhat working with people’s struggles and community development initiatives, observed International Women’s Day at Chumoni Chapori village under the Jhanjimukh area in Jorhat district on Sunday, bringing together local women, community leaders and youth to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in society.
The programme was organized with the participation of women from riverine communities who shared their experiences, challenges and aspirations for greater social and economic empowerment. The event focused on raising awareness about women’s rights, gender equality and the importance of strengthening the role of women in community development.
During the programme, Jollymoni Saikia, a representative of NEADS, highlighted the importance of women’s leadership in building resilient communities, especially in rural and flood-prone areas. She emphasized the need to ensure access to education, livelihood opportunities and decision-making platforms for women so that they can play a stronger role in shaping the future of their communities.
Local women leaders and community members also spoke on the occasion, encouraging women to come forward, raise their voices against social injustice and actively participate in community initiatives and development programmes.
Speaking on the occasion, Tirtha Prasad Saikia from NEADS said that this year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give To Gain,’ reflects the importance of collective support and solidarity in building a more equal society. ‘When communities invest in the empowerment, education and leadership of women, the entire society gains. Women’s participation in decision-making and community development is essential for building resilient and just societies,’ he said.
Various interactive sessions and discussions were held where women shared their views on issues such as livelihood challenges, climate vulnerabilities and the importance of collective action. The gathering concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to work together for gender equality and the empowerment of women in the region.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from a large number of women and community members from Chumoni Chapori and nearby villages.
