Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

Flood waters continue its receding trend. But the affected people have yet to get out of the blues. The toll has gone up to 44 with the recovery of yet another body in Morigaon on Thursday. With this, the toll in Goalpara alone stands at 20 while 16 persons lost their lives in Kamrup Rural. These are apart from 6 in Guwahati and one each in Morigaon and Dhubri. According to official information, 242 villages in four districts are still reeling under the flood waves. In Goalpara, nearly 3.7 lakh people are affected, followed by around 15,000 in Kamrup Rural district.
Assam remembers Mahatma Gandhi on his 145-th birth anniversary along with other parts of the country on Thursday. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi led the state and its people in paying tribute to the father of the nation. Gogoi laid floral wreath at his statue atop Gandhi Mandop in Guwahati in the morning. The Centre will help Assam tide over the flood fury. Rajnath Singh announced Rs 286 crore central share of disaster relief to the state after the Union home minister made an aerial survey on the worst-hit Goalpara and Kamrup (rural) districts on Wednesday.Singh promised more funds once a detailed assessment of the extent of damage was done. Singh announced it after he met chief minister Tarun Gogoi.Earlier, he made his day-long trip to the region during which he made aerial survey of flood-hit districts of Assam and adjoining Garo Hills region of Meghalaya. 
Union home minister Rajnath Singh said that the Centre was expecting a detailed memorandum from Dispur to ascertain the amount of central fund to tide over the flood fury.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati after touring the flood-hit Goalpara and Kamrup(rural), Singh said that an inter-ministerial team would assess the total extent of damage by the flood waves.Singh said, “I met both chief ministers Tarun Gogoi and Mukul Sangma and discussed the situation, and have asked them to send a detailed memorandum each. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi sought divine help to tide over the problems confronting the state these days. Addressing the devotees at a Durga puja mandap in Panjabari area in Guwahati on Wednesday, he hoped that the blessings of the goddess of strength will ensure lasting peace, progress and prosperity in the state. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has congratulated five-time world champion boxer M C Mary Kom for clinching the gold medal in the ongoing 17th Asian Games at Incheon in South Korea. In a statement here, Gogoi said,” her gold clinching performance has assumed more importance because she has become the first ever Indian woman boxer to have won a gold medal at the Asian Games."
