Idol immersion to complete by noon

The Durga puja din and bustle have died down when the idols of the goddess were immersed on Friday. The immersion started from Thursday afternoon across the state. But all committees will complete the immersion process only on Friday. 

In Guwahati also, at least 100 puja committees immersed the idols in three places on the river Brahmaputra which took place till midnight. Others in the premier north eastern city are preparing to immerse the idols by 12 noon at the initiatives of the district administration. 

People thronged in thousands at Kachari Ghat, Pandu Ghat and Noonmati to see the immersion from early in the morning.

Yet another flood wave starts wreaking no less havoc in  Patgaon bazaar and it's adjoining areas rendering over 100 families over a night in Kokrajhar district on Thursday.. The river Kalashi is overflowing after the incessant rains that lashed the district during the last 24 hours and amany areas have come under the surging waters. Local residents here blamed lack of proper cannel or drainage system to pass the surfing river waters which takes place at regular intervals. Many organizations and individuals have stood by Lafiqul Islam Ahmed’s family members in Kokrajhar after unidentified gunmen killed the minority student leader. Nearly 45 people have signed an open letter to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding sustainable support to the bereaved family members of the student leader who was killed on August 1. These signatories suggested the Chief Minister a job to the victim’s family member to prove his good will and a sense of social justice.  They appreciated Sonowal for constituting a special investigation team to probe the murder and referring the case to CBI for probe.

A group of Chakma people from Mizoram staged dharna in New Delhi on Sunday alleging that even after clearing the entrance test, Chakma students from the north eastern state was denied admission in the premier medical colleges. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has urged President Ram Nath Kovind to set up a Presidential retreat in the north eastern region. Sonowal proposed it when he made the newly elected president at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on Saturday.He said the region of eight states would be happy to have a Presidential retreat in lines with the Retreat Building at Mashobra in Shimla and the Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad.According to an official statement, “A Presidential Retreat in the North-east, besides the existing ones in the North and South will symbolise the unity of the country apart from signifying the unity of our diverse cultures and people of the country."
