All about an auto driver

A Manipuri filmmaker Meena Longjam fetches no less pride and glory to the north eastern region when her debut documentary film ‘Auto Driver’ won the Jury’s Special Mention at the recently concluded Signs film festival in Kerala.  

The film deals with the story of a lady auto driver based in the trouble torn city of Imphal. Her moral responsibility to support her ailing husband forced her to took up auto driving profession defying their tradition. It is said that the Auto driver was a part of project development workshop organized by Documentor, Kolkatta in association with TC Foundation Manipur and mentored by international award winning filmmakers.

  Auto driver will be screened in November 12 at Jeevika: Asian Livelihood festival in New Delhi and in the 21st Kolkata International film festival in the competition section.  Ait was co-produced by Ourvillage films and cinematography done by award winning filmmaker Oinam Doren.

IIT-G student wins business contest

Himujjal Jibon Sarma, a Masters in Design from IIT, Guwahati has won the prestigious Business Plan competition of Young Indian’s Guwahati Chapter – Road to Ideas with his proposition on innovations in furniture design and manufacturing.

Road to Ideas is a Business Plan competition organised by the city chapter of CII Young Indians as a part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week being celebrated all across the world between 17 to 23 of November this year. 15 entries were received from various colleges and universities across Assam including 1 from Delhi out of which 5 were shortlisted and asked to present their cases.

“The intent of organising this event is to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship by encouraging young minds to share their enterprising ideas and facilitating them with requisite resources to help start-up” said Sunit Jain, Chairman of CII Young Indians, Guwahati Chapter and Director of Outreach Advertising.

Himujjal would receive Rs.1,00,000 as Seed Capital to help kick start as venture from Brand New Day and mentoring from successful entrepreneurs from the local chapter of CII Young Indians.

Storm lashes Nalbari, Barpeta

Properties worth lakhs of rupees were damaged when storm lashed parts of Nalbari and Barpeta districts on Friday.

The storm erupted in the wee hours and lasted for half and hour destroying hundreds of houses.

Surface traffic communication remained disrupted for several hours as many trees fell on the roads under the impact of the storm.

The worst-hit areas include Tihu where over 200 houses were ravaged, trees, light and telephone posts were uprooted. The extent of damage has yet to be ascertained.

Kaziranga case: Akhil Gogoi arrested

 After days of will-they-won’t-they, police have arrested Akhil Gogoi on Sunday in connection with the recent protest in Kaziranga.
A group of policemen caught the KMSS leaders from his residence in Chandmari in Guwahati in the morning charging him with aiding and abetting the people who staged protest against the eviction drive in the world heritage site where two people were killed in police firing.
Gogoi, who took the leader allegedly fled from the scene and since then policemen in Guwahati and Bokakhar have been looking for him to be arrested.
