Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

A fire that broke out at the Assam Secretariat in Dispur on Thursday reduced to ashes a few crucial files belonging to finance department.  Believed to have been originated from electric short circuit, the fire broke out when chief minister Sarbanabda Sonowal was holding his cabinet meeting in the morning.  Within an hour, fire tenders brought the situation under control. But many crucial files were gutted by the fire.
The Asom Gana Parishad, a vital constituent of the BJP-led government in Assam has reiterated it's opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.  Thr regional party made its position clear when a delegation met Union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday. A huge anomaly of Rs 248 crore is likely to derail the ongoing process to update the National Registrar of Citizenship. According ti Assam Public Work, the man behind the entire anomaly is the project head Ptatik Hajela. The non governmental organization demands a CBI probe into the allegations of anomalies. Bowing down to mounting pressure the Centre has handed over the probe into the killing of Lafikul Islam Ahmed to CBI. Now a CBI probe will unearth the story behind it and identify the killer of the minority student leader on August 1 in Kokrajhar. There has been incessant demand for a CBI probe into thr sensational case forcing the state government to write to the premier investigation agency. The Centre confirmed it on Monday.
The Asom Gana Parishad has demanded total implementation of the Assam Accord detecting and deporting the illegal settlers from thr soil of Assam.  Led by the regional party president Atul Bora, s delegation called on President in  New Delhi on Monday raising a slew of old demands in a memorandum.  Apart from the illegal settlers issue, AGP further demanded steps to consider flood and erosion as national calamity. The Nagaon police probing the recent attack on the former ULFA rebels captured yet another youth on Saturday.  Identified as Rajiv Chakravarty, he was held from a house in the Ambari area in Guwahati where he has been absconding since he punched the former rebels along with his associates.  Acting on a tip off, a team of police from the central Assam district with cooperation from Guwahati police conducted a raid at a house where he was nabbed.  CCTV footage which have gone viral in social media has clear evidence of his attack on the SULFA rebels.
