Int'l art event underway at Guwahati

A host of legendary international artists from across the globe today paid rich tributes to the legendary doyen of Assamese cultural milieu Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla on the occasion of Silpi Diwas at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati as part of the ongoing OFAIES, 2016.

Narayan Konwar, Secretary, Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra paid floral tributes to the portrait of Jyoti Prashad Agarwalla in the morning on the occasion of the doyen’s birth anniversary.

The ongoing event OFAIES, 2016 is organized by the Olympic Fine Arts Association (OFAA), Finland, in association with Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra with support of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Assam.

The weeklong event will conclude on the 22nd of January where master artists were seen performing live in the Kalakshetra in the first of its kind Exhibition and live paintings to be hosted by India.

MGVK Bhanu, Addl. Chief Secretary, Home & Political, Assam also paid a visit to the exhibition and witnessed the live paintings of the Olympian artists and was mesmerized by seeing the exchange of ideas happening with the local artists. He said “the cultural exchange will go a long way in helping the budding artists of our region to learn intestacies of different forms of painting and professionally established artists too will find a good platform to interact and swap ideas”. Some 30 established artists from 18 districts of the State have taken part in the interaction programme.

Mon Thet, an artist from Myanmar has poured his rich tribute to the legend of Assamese art and culture as he painted a portrait of Jyoti Prashad Agarwalla in Acrylic on Canvas titled: “My Honour to the Legend”.

GUWAHATI: Hatigaon police have got remand of four persons in their custody for eight days who allegedly shot dead pulse trader Hemant Chorasia in the city. Identified as Mukuta Das, Nur Alom, Safikul Islam and Ramesh Yadav, they were picked up in this connection and were produced before a local court in Guwahati on Saturday. The incident took place on Wednesday evening when four bikers sprayed several rounds of bullets at Hemant as the trader was on his way back to home after closing his shop. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya police claimed to have killed GNLA commander in chief Sohan D Shira at a heavy gun battle in a remote place on Saturday.The encounter took place at Dobu near Sadagre where a group of GNLA rebels has been hiding for the last couple of days. Acting on some inputs, the Meghalaya police stormed into the area in search of the trouble mongers where the dreaded rebel was killed. GUWAHATI: Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami has expelled Congress legislator Sherman Ali for creating uproar on the floor on Friday. Ali, the legislator from Baghbar was taken out of the floor by the marshal after he refused to remain calm at the instance of the Speaker.   The uproar took place after he raised a question on the pathetic plights of roads and bridges in his constituency. On hearing the reply from PWD minister Parimal Suklavaidya, an unhappy Ali raised some objections and slammed the minister. Despite repeated requests from the chair, he was locked in a verbal dual with the minister. Amid din, the Speaker expelled Ali from the floor.
