21 meritorious performers at various HSLC & HS Board examinations conducted by both CBSE & SEBA were felicitated by the Minority Welfare Society (MWS) at a function held at the Murshidul Alam Memorial Hall at Nabamilan Path Dispur in Guwahati on Sunday. It may be mentioned here that MWS is a social organisation of minority community people who trace their origin to the Barak Valley but are now settled in Guwahati on account of professional or vocational reasons. MWS connects more than 4,000 people through over 350 families who are its members.
At the outset, Mukhtar Hussain Ahmed Choudhury, President of MWS and former Jt Commissioner of Taxes, Govt of Assam welcomed all the outstanding students, their parents, and others present on the occasion. He said, “You have done the community proud. We pray and hope that you all become good citizens of India and become successful in whatever endeavour you choose to excel in.”
Abdul Waris Chowdhury, General Secretary MWS and former Supdt of Excise, Govt of Assam, informed the gathering that MWS is involved in social services for over 20 years now and focusses its attention to issues relating to senior citizens, helping the poor and needy through micro finance, and encourage education among the masses of the society.
Among the students who cleared the Class X Board Examination, Zuha Noor (Srimanta Sankar Academy 95%), Najnin Ahmed (Srimanta Sankar Academy 93%), and Muzakkir Hussain Laskar (Little Flower School 91%) were given special awards. Similarly, special awards for those who cleared the Class XII Board Examination went to Muhsina Shirin Barbhuiya (KV Khanapara 96%), Shabnam Ferdouse Chowdhury (Army School Narengi 96%), Sadia Sultana (Holy Child School 93%), and Md Khairuzzaman Choudhury (Srimanta Sankar Academy 93%).
Dr Jasmine A Choudhury was felicitated for her thesis on “Portrayal of Women: An Analysis of Alice Walker’s Novels” for which she got her PhD from Assam University, Silchar recently. While delivering her acceptance speech, she informed the audience that she was only 18 when her father, Jalal Ahmed Laskar IFS, died while posted in Arunachal Pradesh. She said, subsequently it’s because of the encouragement she got from her husband Aminur Rashid Choudhury Shamim and father in law, Abdul Muktadir Choudhury, former Assam Minister that she could complete her Phd decades after her MA. After serving GNRC for 17 years in different capacities, she now teaches English at USTM.
Jiyauddin Choudhdury, former Addl Registrar of Coop Societies, Assam; Dr Ferdous A Barbhuiya, Associate Professor, IIIT Guwahati; and Prof Saaduddin Choudhury, former Head of Chemistry Departmenty, Cotton College Guwahati also spoke on the occasion. The function was followed by a Quran khatam, iftar get together, and Maghrib congregation prayer.
CRPF jawans physically assaulted Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Friday when he went to inquire about two tea planters who were kidnapped from Mariani. The inciden took place after Nagaland police handed over the duo to Assam counterpart.Two tea garden labourers, Atul Kurmi and Ranjit Nayak, of Naginijan tea estate were kidnapped by miscreants from Nagaland on Thursday. Kurmi along with his supporters went on a rampage, damaging several vehicles and gheraoing the police station. But CRPF jawans beat up him along with his supporters.
Assam BJP legislators will abstain from voting in the Rajya Sabha polls on May 30.Party president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the MLAs would not vote as the party did not support any of the contestants - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Santius Kujur of the Congress and AIUDF's Aminul Islam. Rhino poaching seems to have recurred in Kaziranga. A female rhinoceros was found dead with gunshot wounds and its horn removed in the Kaziranga National Park on Friday.The horn is off from the carcass near Dhanbari camp under Agratoli range by forest guards, taking the total number of the pachyderms killed this year to 25. Three bullet injuries were spotted on the carcass and three used cartridges of an AK-47 rifle were found from the spot.

In what can be termed as a welcome news for the Assamese film industry, “Mayong: Myth/Reality”, directed by Utpal Borpujari and produced by Jayanta Goswami, will be archived by the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) of Great Britain and Ireland so that researchers and academicians associated with cultural ethnography studies can access the documentary.A communication to this effect has been sent to Borpujari by Susanne Hammacher, film officer with the RAI. “We will take the film up to Edinburgh and it will be available in the video library and for any future visitors at the RAI for consultation,” she informed Borpujari. Police took several hours to bring the situation under control. The real extent of damage is yet to be ascertained.
