The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.
Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) has warned against the steps to eulogize the outside personalities by installing their statues who have downplayed Assam and its people. In a statement released on Sunday, the outfit’s publicity secretary Aronodoi Dohotia said that the state’s political leaders who have been kowtowing their bosses in the distant Delhi should stop paying homage to the outside heroes. He said Assam has no dearth of heroes to be highlighted. Eulogizing outsiders would undermine the heroes at home, said the ULFA(I) leader adding questioning the major roads and projects named after Nehru who bad farewell to Assam in his radio speech during the Chinese aggression.
A lower court in Guwahati on Saturday remanded Dr Rakesh Paul to 14 days police custody a day after the APSC chairman was arrested on corruption charges. Amid heavy security, police produced Paul before the CJM court in the Guwahati in the afternoon and sought 14 days remand saying that many stunning revelations would surface during the interrogation. According to information police arrested Paul on Friday. Trouble brews for Himanta Biswa Sarma a couple of days after the senior minister’s comment on Hindu refugees from the neighbouring countries ran into a hail of protest. The Chatra Mukti Sangram Samity has lodged a case against Dr Sarma in Tinsukia police station alleging that the senior BJP leader’s comment is communal which could brew riot. According to eye witnesses of the incident, a Swift Dzire vehicle fall to near by pond due to brake fail while giving side for a speedy bike at Nikashi and three persons,including driver of the vehicle received injuries.
