Cut-off score of Tangla College rises all time high

As you walk into the daunting Tangla college for admissions , the apprehension and tension is palpable. Armed with board exam results, the admission process is in full swing with sky high cut-offs mark and with out any slack. A staggering rise in the cut-off score in undergraduate courses in all the three streams arts, science and commerce in one of the premier institution of Udalguri district Tangla College has worried the guardians and students.

Cut-off in Arts was in English touching almost 80%. This was followed by Economics at 63% and Political science at 55%.

In science stream highest cut off was in Zoology 80% where 131 aspirants applied for 20 major seats. Followed by Chemistry 68% and Botany 64% marks.

In commerce stream highest cutt off was for management 64% followed by Accountancy and Finance 40%. "Higher aggregate percentage scored by students in Class XII boards is the main factor behind this spurt in cut-offs," said an admission committee member of the college. A total of more than 2200 applicants were there for admissions with nearly 600 students applied for major in a subject.

While in Arts stream every subject had 50 major seats; 40 major seats in Commerce and the Science stream lagged behind with barely 20 major seats in each subject. Admission to arts major seats was held on Thursday and Science and Commerce major seat on Friday.

Another source added that other reason for high cut-off score was students from across Darrang, Baksa and Udalguri applied in large numbers for a seat in the college. A faculty member of science stream, on condition of anonymity said that due to small sized science laboratory rooms, since long the major seats intake could not be increased to more than 20. Highest applications in Science stream were seeking major in Zoology and Botany.

Another faculty member of English added that the high cut-off for English was due to large number of applications even from students who pursued HS in Science.
