Gohain gets railway

Rajen Gohain has been given railway ministry hours after the Nagaon MP took oath as minister of state on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi allocated the portfolio to the senior BJP leader fetching a ray of hope for the north eastern region.

Many parties and organizations in the North East have welcomed Gohain saying that he would try his best to enhance railway connectivity in the entire region.

Gohain is the second MP from Nagaon district of Assam to have taken oath as Union minister. Muhiram Saikia was first to have taken oath as Union minister of state for human resource development in the HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral governments.

SC slams RGI: Do NRC otherwise go?

NEW DELHI: In yet another embarrassment for the NDA Government at the Centre, the Supreme Court has asked the Registrar General not to halt the NRC process on the ground of panchayat polls.    Hearing an affidavit by the Centre on Tuesday, a division bench of the country’s apex court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman strongly criticized the authorities saying that the panchayat poll procedure must not disrupt NRC process. They said if need be the government is free to hire officials from outside to conduct the polls.    They said if the RGI fails to do these he must quit the job but the entire process must complete within the time fixed earlier.

Kokrajhar joins Sambhav

Kokrajhar: Kokrajhar joined the nationwide Mission Sambhav on Monday to ensure total cleanliness. In search of tough laws against rapists

GUWAHATI: Cutting across the barriers of their political ideologies, the legislators have strongly felt the need of a new set of laws to firmly deal with the incidents of sexual misconduct. Cong stages walk out in assembly

GUWAHATI: The gangrape and murder incident in Batadrawa has triggered no less uproar on the floor of the Assam Assembly on Monday where the main Opposition Congress staged walk out. Ravaging inferno in Guwahati city heart

GUWAHATI: Properties worth two crore were reduced to ashes when a devastating fire ravaged four buildings in the heart of the Guwahati city on Monday. The incident took place at D Neog Path in ABC area in the wee hours where one of the buildings caught fire because of electric short circuit which later spread to the three adjacent buildings after a few LPG cylinders exploded under the impact of the fire. Six firefighter took nearly three to four hours to bring the situation under fire. The total extent of damage has yet to be ascertained.

Mounting pressure to hang Dhing rapists

BIJOY K BURAGOHAINJORHAT: Hundreds of people hit the streets in Golaghat demanding Justice for the minor girl in Dhing whom three miscreants gangraped and burnt alive on Friday afternoon.
