ULFA(I) diktat defied; tricolor fluttering

Defying ULFA diktat, national flag kept fluttering in the sky of Assam as the state along with other parts of the country celebrated the 70th Independence Day on Monday.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal hoisted the flag in the central function at the Khanapara Veterinary Playground and took salute of the march past by army, police, para military forces and scouts and guides.

In his address, the Chief Minister stressed peace which he said is the key to development. He said that his government has been trying to step up the pace of development and that his government is committed to implement the Assam Accord in letter in spirit.

His cabinet colleagues along with many legislators and bureaucrats unfurled the national flags in the district and sub divisional headquarters in the morning.

Barring a few stray incidents the red letter day is peaceful.

The Guwahati policemen are launching an operation in search of a Brinks Arya driver who went missing with a huge amount of money from the city he was carrying to put in ATM booths along with three others.Identified as Rubul Barman, he went missing from Ganesguri area when a HDFC bank official, security guard and an ATM worker were depositing cash at an ATM booth. The driver took Rs 1.80 crore in cash from the vehicle and vanished from the scene. When the three others returned to the vehicle the driver was not found inside the vehicle forcing them to move police. The police have detained the HDFC bank official and security guard for questionings.

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state. Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Hero Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC have groomed Cameroon defender Andre Bikey as a replacement for injured Miguel Garcia hours before the commencement of the match in Guwahati on Tuesday.Miguel Garcia had suffered an Achilles Tendon rupture earlier this season, requiring a recovery time of 10 to 12 weeks. The 30-year-old Andre Bikey was a free agent having last played for England Championship side Charlton Athletic.
