ULFA(I) diktat defied; tricolor fluttering

Defying ULFA diktat, national flag kept fluttering in the sky of Assam as the state along with other parts of the country celebrated the 70th Independence Day on Monday.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal hoisted the flag in the central function at the Khanapara Veterinary Playground and took salute of the march past by army, police, para military forces and scouts and guides.

In his address, the Chief Minister stressed peace which he said is the key to development. He said that his government has been trying to step up the pace of development and that his government is committed to implement the Assam Accord in letter in spirit.

His cabinet colleagues along with many legislators and bureaucrats unfurled the national flags in the district and sub divisional headquarters in the morning.

Barring a few stray incidents the red letter day is peaceful.

Stunned by the repeated incidents of farmer suicide, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday asked Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia to probe into the circumstances responsible for the suicide of Dibakor Kalita in Nalbari district on Sunday. In an order, Gogoi asked the Chief Secretary to find out the reasons behind the suicide of Dibakar Kalita of Tihu area. The chief minister also asked the farmers to contact the Deputy Commissioners if they face any problem. The deputy commissioners have been asked to resolve farmers' issues immediately.
Amid traditional religious fervor of Kati Bihu, a poor farmer in Nalbari district committed suicide on Sunday sending shock and anger across the state.Identified as Dibakar Kalita, the 48-year-old farmer of Nakhara village in Tihu has been remaining disappointing for the last couple of days after repeated flood waves ravaged his croops. He left behind his wife and two daughters. This is the second suicide committed a farmer in the state in one month.  
Rows and rows of earthen lamps dazzled on Sunday evening when people from old to young, towns to villages, hills to vallies observed Kati Bihu with traditional pomp and gaiety.People in their households and paddy fields offered pujas to the tulsi plants with earthen lamps on the occasion. The Kamrup(rural) police have arrested three more people on Saturday two days after the along with four others gangraped a woman in Rangiya on Thursday. The trio were arrested after the victim’s niece identified them on Saturday. Yet another person is on the run.The incident took place when the victim along with her husband from Tamulpur were on the way to their relatives’ house in the evening. Three persons thrashed the husband and took away the woman to be repeatedly by a gang of seven youths.  The couple have been undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police caught three of the gang hours after the incident while three others were held on Saturday.   
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has accused the home ministry of compounding the vexed foreigners' problem by amending the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950 and Foreigners' Order 1948 in a haste. In a statement issued on Saturday, Gogoi said that the Centre has amended the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950 and the Foreigners’ Order 1948 through a notification on September 7, 2015 by exempting persons belonging to minority community in Bangladesh or Pakistan who have been compelled to seek shelter in India due to religious persecution or fear of religious persecution and entered into India on or before December 31, 2014, it did not mention specifically about their acquiring...
The Kamrup(rural) police have arrested three persons on Friday a day after the trio along with 4 others gangraped a woman in Rangiya after beating up her husband. Senior most Gauhati High Court judge Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei will take over as the Chief Justice on October 21. Assam Governor PB Acharya will administer Vaiphei the oath of office and secrecy at a function in the Raj Bhawan on that day.President Pranab Mukherjee appointed him to replace acting Chief Justice Kazarian Srecdhar Rao who is retiring on that day.  
The death of a girl passenger inside a moving train sends no less sensation in Hojai on Friday. Identified as Anima Tanti, she was found dead inside the Guwahati-Ledo Intercity Express at Hojai station on Thursday midnight. Tani, who was an employee with a non governmental organization in Guwahati was on her way to Doomdooma on Thursday evening. The real cause of the incident has yet to be ascertained. Investigation is going on.
