Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

Raijor Dal on the doorstep

BJP suspends Dibon Deka

Guwahati: Caught in a grim controversy,  state BJP has suspended Dibon Deka a day after police arrested the party leader in connection with the police recruitment scam.  In a statement issued in Guwahati on Thursday, the party made it clear that nobody would be spared and that Deka has been suspended for 6 years.   Deka's  suspension assumes significance at a time when party leaders denied him to be a party member.  Party president said Deka was not a party member even after the party fielded him in 2021 in Barkhetri.  Hemanta Biswa Sarma also said that he has not seen Deka in party office for the last 6 years.  Deka, one of main accused...

Children-literateur Gagan Chandra Adhikari's death condoled

Lots of people have condoled the death of noted children-literateur of Assam Gagan Chandra Adhikari, who contributed tremendously in the field. BJP leader surrenders before police

Guwahati : In a high voltage drama Dibon Deka surrendered before police a week after he was let off in connection with the recent police recruitment scam.  According to information, the BJP leader surrendered before Pattacharkuchi police station to be immediately whisked away by a team of Guwahati police led by additional DGP GP Singh. 

BJP leader likely to surrender

Guwahati: Dibon Deka,  a BJP leader from Nalbari who is said to be one of the main accused in the police recruitment scam is likely to surrender before police.  According to sources,  Deka, who is on the run after he was let off by CID is learnt to have been talking to a few lawyers seeking legal help.   In his social media status Deka claimed the involvement of a circle of top police officers and feared threat on his life.   

Congress demands CM’s resignation

Guwahati: State Congress staged dharna in Dispur on Wednesday demanding Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s resignation alleging his involvement in the recent test for recruitment of police sub inspector. State party president Ripun Bora alleged involvement of Chief Minister’s Officer on Special Duty Ranjit Majumdar in the entire scam. Bora further dared the government to institute a judicial probe into it. On the other hand, AIUDF also demanded CBI probe into the entire scam where question papers meant for police sub inspector recruitment test went viral on social media on September 20.

Shameful: police recruitment test cancelled

Guwahati: In a bizzer incident that forces the BJP government to hang it's head in shame,  the state police recruitment board for selection of Sub Inspector has cancelled the statewide written test midway citing leakage of question papers on Sunday. According to information, the examination which began at 12 noon was suddenly cancelled at 1 PM across the state as soon as the question papers went viral through social media.
