Woman killed in 'witch hunt'

A witch-hunting case was reported in Kokrajhar after recovery of body of an elderly woman at Sutarpara village, Balajan on Monday evening. Four culprits were apprehended in this connection.

According to police, an FIR was lodged with police on Sunday about killing of an elderly  woman by miscreants from Sutarpara village at Balajan police outpost under Kokrajhar PS. The incident took place on March 27 last when miscreants killed Kumila Murmu (50), wife of late Jetha Soren suspecting her of practicing witchcraft and burried the body in a nearby canal. Four persons from the village were apprehended who led to the dead body in presence of executive magistrate.

In another incident, a couple at Polashguri village under Gossaigaon PS was also dragged out from their house and killed on suspect of witch-hunting in the district on March 31 night.

Six persons were arrested so far in this connection and several weapons used in the crime were recovered from arrested persons. A case has been lodged with Gossaigaon PS case no.144/17, u/s 120(B)/448/302/201 IPC.
