IGNOU Guwahati regional centre students facing dark future

The prestigious Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has turned to be earning a 'bad name' as far as its Guwahati Regional Centre is concerned. The students of this institution are heading towards a dark future in absence of proper guidance and reckless attitude of the officials, who are supposed to look after their students' career and bright future. According to the students, the regional centre is running under full anarchy. There is not a single responsible person, except the regional centre director, Mrs V. Bhattacharya, who has to remain for most of the times outside the city on her official assignments. It is alleged that the deputy director, second in position, does not take any responsibility to solve the problems of the students. He does not like to meet the students. Not only this, he has asked the office staff also not to receive any complaint from the students, if they try to lodge in writing.

The rules and regulations framed by the IGNOU, New Delhi, are not adhered to at the Guwahati centre. Normally the counseling sessions are supposed to be held at study centers on the weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). But at Guwahati centre does not follow the rules mentioned by the University. Here the classes are held according to the convenience of the faculty members, because all the faculty members are part timers. The purpose and benefits of distance education is over ruled.

It is also alleged that some of the faculty members insist on the students to go for coaching without which their success in exams was not possible.

Besides, the academic consultant has no specific timings to attend the office. On most of the occasions he is reported to be on leave. Even if he happens to face any student he finds himself helpless to solve his problem. Most of the students have not received the study materials till now although one semester exams are over. Some students having access to the Internet have complained that their mails sent to IGNOU Guwahati centre are bounced back as the mailbox is not regularly checked. In the meantime, a number of students have left the institution because of the affairs going on there. On the whole, the IGNOU Guwahati centre is running in a mess and playing with the future of the students. The students feel if the working of the IGNOU Guwahati centre is not improved immediately, the dark days are not at; distance for them who have chosen for the distance education under IGNOU.

Non receipt of study-material on time causes difficulty to complete the assignment on time.Hence it takes years to complete a course as working people have limited time span to study.Evevtually it becomes a burden on the student and student looses interest in it.Lack of contact programme to clarify doubts are another issue. Many working people left the courses half done resulting in loss of money, effort, valuable years.

The serial bomb blasts in Assam on the eve of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA)’s foundation day is a clear indication of the state government’s failures in protecting the lives and properties of the people. Ensuing Lok Sabha polls are going to be a tough battle for the Congress party in the north-eastern region. The reason behind such assumption is the poor handling of sensitive issues by the party leaders in almost all the states of this region. Recent developments in the political arena clearly indicate that the party is ‘nervous’ because of political alliances of various parties to fight the mal-administration in the states’ affairs. So far Assam is concerned the alliance for the elections between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has made the party afraid of crumbling its continuous rule for eight years in the state. Besides, emergence of Assam...
With the declaration of Lok Sabha elections by the Election Commission of India, all the national and regional political parties have geared up their activities to grab power at the centre of administration. Polarization of political parties has begun with various old friends changing sides and new friends coming closer. Whereas, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has lost a few old friends in the country, it has succeeded in shaking hands with new friends in the north-eastern part of the country. In Assam, the activities are on full swing. The picture is almost clear as major alliances have already taken place and the formation of Third Front has taken back seat. Attempt by Left parties...
Lack of proper rehabilitation policy for increasing population and callous attitude of the civil machinery have hampered the development of the city. Dream of Clean and Green city shown to the citizens has been shattered. With the elections coming closure people are advised to have patience as the new government would perform better, but this could not be done till now even after several guards have changed. Encroachment is a chronic problem of the Guwahati city, the capital of Assam and local authorities have failed to provide solution to overcome this menace. From time to time it has been observed that the civil administration takes steps to evict unauthorized occupation of government...
Indian Railways have planned early electrification of entire tracks in the country without imagining the problems to be faced by the people in future. So long the government’s scheme to electrify all the villages of the country is not properly implemented and most of villages are still waiting to see the light of electricity. Side effects of the Railway’s hasty decisions may put the country in great problems. The government should re-think about the plans and programmes and should not try to implement it for political gains. It may be noted that every electric locomotive of 4.5 MW (6000 HP) deprives 15,000 households of their electricity needs and 14.7 percent villages in...

Malpractices and corruption have invaded the public departments to a large extent. However, the people in general and tax payers in particular, try to cooperate with the authorities in the urban areas with a hope that their conditions would be considered in a positive way with respect, which they deserve. But this is not found in the treatment of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), which has the responsibility of improving the conditions of the city and its citizens. It is the plight of a municipal market namely, Ulubari Bazar, in a central place of Guwahati city, the capital of Assam. This market is exploited by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), since its establishment about...
