Amid an escalating cut off year controversy the Assam Congress has written to the Centre in support of 1971 as the cut off year to detect and deport the Bangladeshi immigrants from the state.
In a memorandum sent to Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday, APCC president Ripun Bora and Opposition leader Debobrata Saikia said the party would not demand 1951 as the cut off year.
Bora and Saikia said,”the Section 6A of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 prescribed March 25, 1971 as the cut off year for detection and deportation of the foreigners in the state of Assam.”
They said the Assam Accord with March 25, 1971 as the cut off year has been accepted by all sections of the society long ago and that NRC works were also in progress with hat base year.
Apart from these, they wrote, many promises in the Accord has been implemented which include cultural complex, central varsities' and oil refineries.
This will help the Centre reiterate the same base year before the constitutional bench of the supreme court which is hearing a set of petitions from Monday.
