The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

A 4-years old boy, son Anirudha Saikia and Padma Saikia of Geleky, Methonchuwa of Sivasagar was kiddnapped by one Diganta Sasoni of the same village on Wednesday. The boy is recovered by Geleky Police in association with the Mathurapur police station this morning from the Sriguru Ashram of Maibella, Sonari.
Tengapukhuri out-post under Mathurapur Police station has arrested one Minu Ali, the conductor of a 709 mini bus (AS01-F-5007) on molestation charges on Wednesday. The complaint was filled by Lakhsmipriya Duwora Borgohain of Gorgaon Sunpura Gohain Gaon, Pallabi Konwar, Mamoni Barua, Malabika Hatimuria, resident of Rohdoi Pukhuri, Pator Gaon - all are student of Dol Bagan Higher Secondary School, traveled in the bus to their school.
The NGO, Jeuti (Unnatir Ek Yatra), under their project, Grammya Arthik Sashalata Mancha, organised a week long workshop at Singhdwar Community Auditorium. In this workshop they trained the participants to make items from the Jute, Water Hyacinth and un-used materials. The NGO also help their trainees for loan and marketing of their products. Nearly 150 trainees attened in this workshop.

Sensation prevails in Golaghat district of upper Assam when Nagaland policemen thrashed a group of school girls on Wednesday. The incident took place at around 9 in the morning as the policemen beat up some school goers at Thuramukh under Golaghat police station. Altogether 50 students, mostly girls, have been injured in the incident. Fifteen of these injured students have been rushed to the Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital. Jayanti Gogoi and Latumoni Bhuyan have been seriously injured.
Abahoni Limited of Bangladesh lift the presitgious Bordoloi Trophy at the end of a thrlling clash with 3 Star Club from Nepal on Wednesday in Guwahati. The 3 Star Club, Nepal was defeated by 3-0 gaols at the Nehru Stadium in the evening. The thrilling match was enjoyed by several thousands of football fans. The Nepal team has entered the final in their Bordoloi Trophy debut, while, Abahoni have played on earlier edition of the trophy. Assam's overall flood situation remains grim on Wednesday with Brahmaputra flowing above the danger leevl affecting atleast five lakh people.
According to the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra is crossed danger level at Guwahati, Goalpara, Sibsagar, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Nimatighat, Naharkatia and Tezpur.
This wave have affected 11 districts where vast tracks of farm land and a large number of human habitations have been submerged in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Goalpara and Barpeta.
The wave of floods has so far claimed two lives in two separate incidents in lower Assam.

Suspected United Liberation Front of Asom has kidnapped nephew of former Congress MP Manikumar Subba from Tinsukia district of Assam on Wednesday. According to information, a few youths kidnapped Ajoy Raj Subba at gun point from Bordubi in the morning. A mild tremor has shaken parts of Guwahati and its neighbouring lower Assam districts on Saturday. As the mild quake struck at around at 12-33 pm, a section of the panic stricken residents in the city started coming out of their houses. According to US Geological Research center,the intensity of the earthquake is 4.8 in the Richter scale. There is however no report of any casualty.
