The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

A major incident of blast was averted on Thursday when an improvised explosive devise was found near a polling station in Assam's Autonomous District (ST) Lok Sabha constituency.
Accoridng official sources, a police patrolling party found the IED at Disobai, under Bokolia police station of Karbi Anglong district early this morning prior to commencement of polling at 7 am.
Later police defused the bomb by disconnecting its wires, the sources said, adding, security was on high alert in the constituency comprising the twin hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills district.

Brisk pollings have been reported from Silchar, Diphu and Karimganj where thousands of voters are lined up before polling booths to excercise their francise. An eerie silence is prevailing in Karbi Anglong distirct a day after the Kamrup Express had a narrow escape when KLNLF militants targetted the passenger train with bombs.
This has forced the poll bound district to beef up security forces to foil any attack of the Karbi rebel outfit.

Police claimed to have foiled a major blast in Guwahati when they recovered two powerful bombs from Lakhra Chari ali in the city on Saturday morning. Both the bombs were kept in a deserted land of the area.
According to information, police recovered two powerful bombs at Forest Gate near Lokhra on Saturday morning. The bombs were kept in a heap of garbage and both the bombs weighed 10 kg and 3 kg respectively.

Two policemen died when DHD(J) rebels sprayed a goods train with bullets in North Cachar hills district on Saturday. According to information, the incident took place at Langting at around 7-30 in the morning as the Silchar bound good train reached the area. The deceased were identified as Lalita Burahgohain and Bisheswar Bora. Caught in this situation, the North East Frontier railway authorities have cancelled all trains on this route.
