The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

One stray rhino of Kaziranga National Park killed a woman Subheswari Ghatowar of Rajabari recently at her residence. Later the rhino was taken back to the park. Another two rhinos of KNP are presently taking shelter in Rohita Chapari of Dergaon. The Forest Department, on the other hand are strictly following the rhinos for protection. It was reported that rhinos go out of the park to mate with other rhinos.
Three KLNLF cadres were killed in three separate encounters with army in Bokolialghat in Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday. According to information, two camps of the Karbi rebels outfits have been busted in the district during the on going operation. According to information, the deceased was identified as Ritwik Hensik. Army have further recovered a nine mm pistol made in America with 12 round of live ammunition from the encounter site.as identified as Ritwik Hensi.
Mohini Rabha, wife of Kalaguru Bishnuprasad Rabha dies on Wednesday. She was 79. She breathed her life at her own residence in Tezpur at around 4:30 in the morning.

There is report of simmering tension in Jalpaiguri district early on Tuesday morning as supporters of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha and anti-Gorkhaland group clashed with the Akhil Bhartiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad (ABAVP) activists. According to information, the incident took place after GJM supporters raided and ransacked the house of a ABAVP leader, John Barla, in Lalkipara tea estate area.Irked by the ransacking of their leader's house, ABAVP activists torched three houses of GJM supporters in the area.
A major tragedy has been averted in Guwahati on Tuesday morning when police recovered a powerful bomb at Fancy Bazar area. The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Monday has made it clear that none of its top leaders have been using the soil of Bangladesh as its base. In a statement ULFA president Arabinda Rajkhowa said it’s a conspiracy to malign their image. Rajkhowa said there is no question of using the soil of Bangladesh while they are continuing the struggle for an end to the colonial rule of new Delhi. He alleged that the government has ignored any steps for a dignified political settlement of the conflict.He further alleged that the government has been blaming it all on the ULFA after successfully making a series of explosions in public place.
Operations against ULFA rebels gets intensified throughout the state with a few days left for Republic Day. According to information, police have some inputs that the banned outfit have smuggled consignments of arms and ammunition into Assam to foment more trouble in the run-up to the Republic Day.Director General of Police G.M. Srivastava said huge quantities of arms and ammunition recently seized from upper Assam's Tinsukia district and that these had been procured by ULFA's 28th battalion and did not belong to the battalion's 'a' and 'c' company whose cadres are currently on an unilateral ceasefire.He said most of the weapons were of Chinese make but a probe is on to determine the route...
