Sonowal in cabinet expansion mood!

NEW DELHI: BJP central leadership is understood to have cleared the decks for the Assam cabinet expansion at the end of an hour long meeting between Amit Shah and Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi on Friday. 

Senior party leaders who refused to be named told Assam Times that Shah and Sonowal finalized the induction of eight new members in the expended cabinet where three sitting ministers would be dropped. 

Of the ten new faces AGP and BPF have one each while others are BJP legislators who are expected to take oath in a day or two. 

Chief minister Sonowal, however, avoided the media persons, who were waiting outside the official residence if the BJP president.

12th SAG Chef de Mission visits Guwahati Shillong

The Chef de Mission (CdM) from eight participating countries- India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan and Afganistan visited various venues of the 12th South Asian Games at Guwahati on on Monday. The Games will be jointly hosted by Guwahati and Shillong from February 5 to 16.

The high level delegation comprising officials from eight participating nations visited Sarusajai Sports Complex, Moullana MD Tayabullah Hockey Stadium, Kahilipara Shooting Range, All Assam  Tennis Association and Bhogeshwari Phukanani Indoor Stadium.

After the visit, the delegation expressed its satisfaction on the preparations of the Games. The officials will now visit the Games venues in Shillong on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Injeti Srinivas, CEO, OC-SAG, welcomed the guests from the eight neighboring countries and apprised them with the progress of the Games.

Srinivas said, “All ongoing works will be completed by the end of this month. The Organising Committee is working hard for the success of the Games. There will be nodal hotels for each country. We have shortlisted 80 hotels in Guwahati and 50 in Shillong to provide satisfactory and comfortable facilities to our guests and athletes,” he said.

The 12th South Asian Games, 2016 to be held in Guwahati and Shillong, is expected to be the biggest international multi-sporting extravaganza, a first of its kind in the North Eastern region. More than 2500 athletes will take part in the 12-day sporting event. The 23 sports disciplines of the Games are – archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, football, handball, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho kho, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu.

GUWAHATI: Senior Congress leader and former minister Govind Chanda Langthasa passed away ag a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday.

The end struck at 1.30 ay night in Down Town Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for the last couple of days.

APCC leaders along with many Dimasa people living in the city thronged the hospital premises as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire in the wee hours.

After the last respect at the Rajib Bhawan premises in Guwahati in the morning, the life less Langthasa scion is being brought to Haflong for last rites according to Dimasa tradition.

Many public leaders and organizations have condoled Langthasa's death and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
